In regards to the Idol I like the output jack having dual purpose output jack with integrated optical out. If it only had optical in as well. Despite having a decent PCM5122 chip the TAS1020b is only USB 1.1, likely more device compatible. So despite the PCM5122 being capable of 384khz. The idol is limited to 96khz 24bit is max rez due to USB 1.1 bandwidth. The current "objective" ODAC uses a PCM5102 which is of the same chip family.
The Amp section is only 200mw total at .1% thd 32ohm. Not likely to drive all headphones. On the plus side, it likely has low power draw and good battery life running off phones/tablets.
For comparisons for Sound quality, The DACport is in another higher class comparable to desktop DACs in the $500 plus range with its AKM4490 dac chip. Its weakness is its higher constant power draw thanks to its class A amp section. Most recommend a supplemental battery supply for longevity with phone use. Jitter is minimal and the DACport uses a superior approach to control that. The digital volume pot is excellent as well. The DACport outclasses the Fulla Schitt in all ways.
I have both the DACport slim and HD and recommend them for desktop/laptop reference uses, but for 8 hour plus portability, other options need to be considered. CENtrance has in the works a portable version with battery built in. If it only had optical in/out then it would be one DAC to rule them All.
I use the Fiio E07k for portable situations as it has a built in battery but is a bit bulky.
At $40 I am tempted to use the SMSL Idol for a phone-tablet/flac player car stereo Aux line in use for its size and lower power draw.
If on a budget and you can only get 1 Dac get a DACport slim. Then you will know what a proper DAC should sound like and will enjoy its quality for years.
The SMSL IDOl however has a good price, usability and a nice case.
