Product is good but Massdrop service is way below expectation. I have the unit for 4 months. I barely use it for 10 hours, the unit broke down. I contact Massdrop support and there was no response after 2 weeks. I contacted SMSL, they told me if I buy from Massdrop, I should get warranty from Massdrop.
Nice DAC for the price, can decode both DSD and PCM, nice built, easy to use , small, compatible with mobile phone the only downside is noticeable noise at high volume.
The sound is good, when it works. The quality control on the RCA jacks is bad. Without having a downward pressure on the cables, this doesn't make any sound in one channel. There was absolutely no support from SMSL on this product.
Really dishes the monolithic stereocity in a small way. I keep spazzing out because my ear lobes are fractured kind of like the chick with the snake tongue.
Works well as a small compact DAC. Gets one star because it arrived with a dead power supply which to the credit of SMSL promptly replaced. But, after 8 months of ownership the LCD display has failed so I cannot see what settings I am using? The DAC part still works but this is disappointing quality control on the part of SMSL.
Nice unit, Nice construction. I have been playing with it for about a month. What people hear and like is subjective. Compared to my other DACS (lower priced) the M8A sounds over processed (to me). I worked professionally (tech) on sound processing equipment from 1984-2008 if anyone would like to know my point of reference for my comment.
Cheers
I do not recommend small products at all because smsl support is not responding to calls.
This dac is not working to its full posible potential, I have made a research why and found that's a driver problem but when the manufacturer is not responding it's even a biger problem.
[USB bit: 16 bit, 24 bit, 32 bit]
***only 24 bit is on.
[USB: PCM: 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, 192, 352.8, 384, 705.6, 768 kHz]
***only 192 khz is on.
For me If a manufacturer is not responding it's a good reason why not to buy his products anymore.
It is a very good product and I actually have two of them. If you have hi-res files you wish to play, this will decode almost anything. It is helped a lot by a linear power supply. Good luck on that (for now) the SMSL LPS is no longer made. Others can be had and they work well. However, be warned, you will need to hunt out DC power connectors because the plug on the SMSL is NOT a standard 5.5mmx2.1mm DC connector. It is just smaller enough to be annoying. But it can be solved. I'm happy with both of SMSL DACS and hope if you choose one, you will be also.
