Nice sound for the value.
I can’t compare the sound with other headphone amplifiers, because previously I used portable players with DAC functionality. Some times, I pass the signal through an old NAD desktop amplifier. I must say that I don’t have any amplification problem with my current headphones the 58X jubilee, the HD599 or the PXC 550, but thinking to make future investments in power demanding headphones, I acquired this first headphone amplifier. I’m also want to taste the THX chipset sound, as commented in the net the low distortion and neutrality. In any case, I wasn't expect a great improvement with my current headphones, that are moved quite well with any mobile device. I received the amp before a new ordered GRACE SDAC that complete my current stack. Waiting that SDAC arrive to Spain, I used the SP200 with a Raspberry pi stacked with a DAC card, and the Volumio image. Using this simple configuration, I was surprised for the improvement, despite the lack of accuracy that provides the Rasp Dac card. Recently I received the SDAC and I finished to mount my current stack. I’m very pleased with the investment and the result. Using that configuration, I appreciate a great improvement in the musical scene and instrument separation. I can enjoy and appreciate that improvement in any kind of music. The sound is not fatiguing at all. I’m using the stack mainly with the 58X, and love the detail and space I feel in the scene. About the amplification, I usually listen the music in low gain and practically never pass from the 9 o clock. I feel that I can use this configuration with more power demanding headphones in the future.

GraomananThe HD 58X improves greatly with a better DAC and amplification. The bass and sub bass becomes much tighter and focused while remaining punchy and full. I prefer the 58X to the 600. The 600 is too flat, too neutral. The 6XX is very similar to the 58X with the improved sub bass and accented highs, and the 660s is much like the 58X, but slightly improved in every way -- more defined bass and sub bass and more clarity, detail and presence. But the price for the 58X is sooOOoo gooood! Happy day!

eddiezrMany thanks for comment, I totally agree with you. A friend told me that I would have a big improvement with a good amplification and truly was the case: the results exceeds my expectations. About the 58X really I'm very happy with them, I acquired them during a Drop offer and the result for the price is excellent. I only can compare with the 599 that feel a bit more darker and a bit less accurate with the highs. Now I should think next movements, but I think while I do it I can enjoy a lot with my current equipment. I understand that seems that the 660s should be the best candidate over the others you compare with the 58X.

GraomananI tested the 660S at a local HiFi dealer and they're a bit of an upgrade over the 58X in most areas with the midrange the most noticeable improvement. More balanced overall with better clarity, detail, and resolution. But only by a small amount, actually. The 58X has a deeper, fuller sub bass, which I prefer. The 800S, however, is a significant jump up in quality in every way possible, as it damn well should be for $1,500+! The 800S has a much more natural, less severe high end than the original 800, and they've tuned the mid bass, bass up to be more full and dynamic and make most music sound incredible. The 800S will make you realize that premium quality headphones are a modern miracle! But now there's the Drop/Sennheiser HD 8XX that's supposed to be even better than the 800S--even better upper mids and even deeper bass--but $400-500 less expensive?! What will I do?! And then there are the Focal brand headphones that go up to $10,000 and sound like actual full size speakers in the room with you and not headphones on your ears. So much to desire... ; )

GraomananHello, I am also from Spain. Did you have to pay customs for the smsl sp200? If they stopped you, how much was it in total? Thank you.

eddiezrNice to know possible progression ways. I really appreciated your opinions about that. For your explanation probably the 660S are relatively close to the 58X, and going to a 800S or now a 8XX will represent a most drastic improvement. At the moment I'll try to enjoy of my current configuration, but I agree with you that probably the 8XX can be a nice candidate when the budget allows a change. For the moment, I think my current configuration give me the opportunity to enjoy a lot next months. I also will considerate possible DAC improvements, but step to step. Best regards and thanks.

NandusI don't know the costs of the customs payments in this case. I hear that can be a 2?%, but I can't ensure because in my case the package arrived directly by Correos without any previous notification or request.
