A High-End Headphone Hero

One look at the SMSL SP400, and it’s clear that this is a headphone amp that’s built with quality and care—and that quality extends far beyond the chassis. Using a PCB with 6-layer immersion-gold components and high-precision, low-temperature drift resistors, this headphone amp is impressive inside and out. SMSL has also loaded the SP400 with THX AAA technology to provide feed-forward error correction, minimal sound coloring, and a truly balanced and natural listening experience. There are both balanced and unbalanced outputs, as well as a pre-balanced option for full-featured I/O flexibility. On the spec sheet, you’ll find up to 440 milliwatts of output at 600 ohms, with more headroom as you step down, providing tons of flexibility for a wide set of high-end headphones. And, thanks to as little as 0.00007% total harmonic distortion and a 133-decibel signal-to-noise ratio, that THX-driven audio will be pristine and artifact-free all the way through. As mentioned up top, the entire unit is wrapped in a beautifully durable aluminum case with a 1.9-inch LCD screen for a high-end look that matches its high-end sound

Question
Would the Balanced Output power rating be too high for a HD 8XX? (I know I'm a heretic, already have a warm DAC and the SH-9, but would take more power if it's not going to blow out the HD 8XX's)

Hey, I've had these (and the HD880s) a few times, if you stay in low gain you won't risk damage. It's all about volume wheel control. If you equalize those headphones with a big preamp reduction...Read More
