At this point, I'm not entirely sure what the point of the D1 is. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing it. It is a sweet DAC; looks, features, test results. I'm just asking is it really worth $850 when SMSL keeps spitting out new designs that beat it in the test stats? They released the M500 a month or two ago for a fairly sweet $400. It uses the same ES9038Pro, has a better remote, a nice large display, does most all the same I/O (no AES, but I doubt many people here use it anyways), and supports full MQA Decode and Render (if that is your thing). It doesn't have the nice physically isolated power supply, but it does have a built in supply, not a brick. It also appears to use internal supply for USB, instead of bus power (this is inferred, not verified). ASR ran it through its paces and it is worth checking out before buying the D1. Especially considering Amirm found it was a smidgen better than the D1, test result wise. Same chip, better test results, over $400 cheaper.

verifonixI prefer to judge equipment by actually listening to it. I am done buying dacs as I am set with my TT2 and MScaler. If Amir prefers his topping dacs great for him.

SaleenjimHow do you figure that measurements posted at ASR are a “sham”?

Major_InfidelI am not saying that the measurements are a sham. I think that Amir is a shill for topping. There is more to sound than just measurements.

SaleenjimDo you believe that he falsifies the measurements for Topping products? Or are you saying that he simply measures too many of their products that happen to legitimately measure well? And when it comes to sound, what role should a DAC play other than to transparently convert ones and zeros into the exact sonic waveforms that were recorded by the artist’s audio engineers? Measurements help us assess how well a particular DAC comes to meeting that goal. Now, I would agree that there’s more to a DAC than just measurements. There are things like the DAC’s feature set, its build quality and the manufacturer’s service and support. But IMHO, sound coloration should be the domain of amps and transducers, not DACs.

Major_InfidelThis is the reason that I have chosen the Chord TT2 to me it is nothing but one of the most transparent dacs that is available. It also has one of the cleanest headphone outputs as well. I appreciate transparency in sound my daily driver headphonea are Abyss AB-1266 TC and the noble Khan. The one are where different dacs can make a bigger difference is in speaker setups. I can say that there is a marked difference in sound stage depth with the TT2 over other dacs. It presents wider and deeper than my sp1000cu which is pretty damn transparent as well.
FayneLook I own it and moved up from a Schiit Bifrost Uber. Zeos really like this in real world listening etc. It is a solid well made unit. Are there better? There always is? But for me it just sounds awesome and it's well made. I will never use MQA any way is it is not a deal breaker for me. The Topping D90 uses the AK4499 chips. Are they better? Who knows, but not me and I am not saying they are better, the same or worse. AMR's testing works for me and the differences are not even audible AFAIK so testing only goes so far, As Van Alystine said listening is more important than specs. I owned one his amps in the day along with a Db Pre-amp and assorted other gear.
