A Modern Desktop DAC That Channels the Past

SMSL’s high-end VMV line brings modern aesthetics and top-tier performance to desktop DACs. The D3 2-R2 takes a bit of this modern design language and merges it with the past—using four classic Texas Instruments 2R2 chips (two per channel) to perform a perfectly balanced digital-to-analog conversion. There’s also an NPC SM5847 digital filter chip to round out the offering for an impressively premium sampling performance. Complementing this hardware is a 16-core XMOS chip for plenty of processing headroom, which allows for high-res sampling rates up to 32 bits and 768 kilohertz. The rest of the components provide even more precision, with two low-phase crystal oscillators for clock performance and seven additional Texas Instruments OPA1612 op amps for extra-low harmonic distortion—all housed in a sleek chassis with a colorful LCD to elevate the aesthetics of your audiophile setup.
