Agreed. Please don't assume that the price point on these is wrong, especially if you've never listened to the Z1R before. Because if you have, you know that these are worth the $2K plus price tag. Not just for the sound quality and reproduction that is totally ground breaking and like nothing you've heard before. But because they are built like a tank but yet the most comfortable headphone I've ever owned. I sold my HD800S, my LCD2, and my Mr. Speaker Ether+ once I owned the Z1R and realized it was the headphone killer for at least the next 2 years. It's that good. And I bought mine from Amazon for around $1900. So this is a steal assuming it comes with the full Sony warranty. I've been listening to my Z1R for about 5 months now and it sounds divine when paired with the Sony WM1A and/or the ZH1ES. After first owning the Z1R, I bought the rest of the signature gear because I know it will be the best audiophile solution for a long time. Sony, you are back on top of the audiophile game with this 70th anniversary piece of engineering innovation. And the look of these get me questions/comments everytime I listen to them in the coffee shops! They are beautiful and sound isolating to boot. :)

keydetThe pair I listened to sounded like they had a sheet of thick paper between the earcups and my ears. Sort of almost muffled. Dunno if the drivers were faulty on that particular pair but they definitely weren't as good as the Focal Elear which surprised me a lot

keydetTyll at InnerFidelity gave these a pretty poor review due to their "bass-heavy, veiled, and zingy" qualities saying he would "rather listen to the Audio Technica ATH-M50x" I haven't been able to listen to these but the fact that there are those who think they sound worse than an ATH-M50x at this price is concerning.

GinronWell, let's just say that Tyler and I don't agree on much of anything. I followed not one, but two of his recommendations and I never heard what he was hearing. So it goes to show you that one has to find their own perfect headphones and not listen to every so-called professional reviewer on the web. Also, I've found that actual headphone purchasers have the best reviews and advice. That's because they've spent MORE TIME with the headphones than these pro reviewers. It's takes time to tell if a headphone is better or worse than your current reference headphone. You can't do that in a 30 minute listening session. One should check amp pairings, and then across different source material. the reason that he didn't like the Z1R might just be because his source was not right for the Z1R. I've found it has so much depth and range that if you listen to sub-par amp/dac, you will hear it in these headphones. Put it with Sony's Signature amp or WM1A ... they shine because the source is clean, even, and powerful. In summary ... don't put your blind trust is these self-proclaimed audiophile / headphone experts.

GinronYes, I think we've all read Tyll's review on these. I can't say I agree much. One thing is true: the Z1Rs sounded bad for me fresh out of the box. But once it's nicely burned in, it really starts to open up and sounds great! Only thing is: "does one like these enough to take the plunge on a new set and have the patience to burn them in."

needhelpExcellent point on burn-in. Same experience with mine. But I was also burning in my WM1A DAP at the same time. Now I'm hearing musical separation and soundstage I've never heard in my music before. I'm now able to pick out the different drums and their location, and really hear all the movement and contact in the kick drum pedal. It's so real and alive on studio recordings! You could pay me to give up my Z1Rs now that they fully broken in and capable of unbelievable music reproduction of just about every genre.

DavidChenNZI've heard the Elear many times and own the Z1R. The Z1R has incredible clarity and almost sounds like an open back headphone. The Elear sounds muddy and muffled and is pretty horrible. The Focal Clear is a much better headphone than the Elear, but not as good as the Z1R.
