Was in the market for a DAP but didn't want to spend a lot as this would be mainly for travel. I played with the idea of the Pioneer 300R or one of Fiio's DAP's. I liked the sizing on those but this was slimmer and more portable to be in the pocket. The playback life on this is so much better as it is not a full android interface plus a large TFT screen to power. Sound quality is good compared to those and with the addition of a portable amp it makes it that much better. A big seller on this for me was the ability to have balanced out. Another plus is the hi quality bluetooth codec when paired to other wireless devices or even streaming from my phone to this. A noticeable difference in quality of music when paired wirelessly.
I'm very happy with the zx300a, received a two weeks ago, put a 400Gb sandisk microSD in it. After over 100 hours of burn-in it sounds really good with the fostex purple hearths and akg K7XX, massdrop EDC3, Sure se-315, and wireless performance with LDAC is good with the wh1000m3. Mainly listening to FLAC standard or hires I get well over 20hours of playback. The file navigation system is OK, only it seems to fail loading some covers from tags or folder.jpg files, I haven't yet found the pattern or reason why (at first I tought png vs jpg). Eq and DSP is alright but I mainly use it in direct mode. imperceptible noise floor, very deep bass coming through on the fostex listening to things like lorn or trap sounds, highs definitely present but not harsh. I'd say the unit is rather on the flat and hifi side (which I really enjoy after using other players with booming mids, muddy bass and lack of highs). So far it worked with anything I threw at (meshuggah, death grips, sleep, 6lack, rosetta, nails, aesop rock, Belà Bartok, strapping young lad, karl hector and the malcouns, tony allen, LORN, mars volta, etc.)
DAC function is also great under windows (haven't tried linux yet), but latency makes it unusable for watching movies unless your video player allows for desyncing audio. Build quality, physical buttons, screen quality and battery life waaaaaay better than any android-based DAP I've tried, even high-end ones from AK, cowon, pioneer...
