Can someone please confirm if this is using standard USB cable or if it is proprietary Sony cable? At one time Sony used to slap proprietary cables on anything so traveling with their products used to be utter nightmare.

Proprietary Sony to USB cable. With 30 - 50 hours of battery life (depending on audio quality and volume) I wouldn't think it's too much of a concern.

Samsung's high-end Galaxy line is usually outfitted with two types of chipsets - Snapdragon or the homebrew Exynos. Qualcomm's Snapdragon comes with an embedded analog converter (DAC), while for the Exynos version Samsung usually outfits the phones with a dedicated, higher-quality sound processor, and the Note 4 is no exception. just like the Galaxy S5 before that. Its Exynos 7 Octa version has been granted a Wolfson Microelectronics WM5110E Audio Hub CODEC with a Voice Processor DSP, a teardown revealed, and, coupled with the three directional mics that record high quality stereo audio, the Exynos Note 4 is one of your good bets for a quality audio experience, when paired with top-shelf earbuds, and despite the lack of stereo speakers.
