R000Well, that's a terrible view of the website if i saw one. Massdrop does not set the real value for the product. plus its already being discounted, i dont understand what you're complaining about.
R000I had a similar reaction: I can easily build one of these on my own. And I have access to a bunch of old lock cylinders, being in the apartment management business.
But I bought one of these sets anyway, seeing as I have no time to build anything these days.
What the description doesn't make clear is that each of the included cylinders comes installed with the number of pins indicated by the number on the cylinder. So cylinder 1 has one pin, 2 has two, etc., up to 5.
I initially thought they were all 5 pin cylinders, just different ones.
Well, if you are learning from the ground level, this graduated approach does give you a better understanding of how your actions are affecting the pins and locking mechanism. This is especially apparent with the lower numbered pin cylinders. So there is a value to what you get in terms of learning.
If all of these had been 5 pin cylinders, you'd have less of a cause and effect understanding of what you just did, and more of a sense of just getting lucky.
So while you could build something like this yourself, it would take some time and effort to assemble a graduated set of cylinders like this yourself. Which is why I think this is a decent deal, if you consider the educational value of the set.
Having said that, I do agree that Massdrop is not the culprit in what one might consider a too high price for the material. It is Southord who set the retail price, so they should bear the burden of complaint if you feel the price is too high.
