Spyderco isn’t known for its flippers, but the Advocate is a great example of the company’s ability to pull off a stellar design. A production version of Gayle Bradley’s custom knife, the Advocate has a 3.5-inch blade made from M4 stainless steel Read More

Seriously, why cant Spyderco make a flipper that doesnt suck? I went to the knife shop to check out the Sliverax (no, not Silverax, SLiverax; apparently they're no better at naming flippers than they are designing them), and the damn thing pinches your finger with the lock every time you flip the blade open. But that's nothing compared to this beauty, the Mantra 3, that I got stuck with because I apparently went insane for just long enough to prepay for the thing months before its release. Look at the choil:

My fingers are pulled back so you can see the size of the handle, but otherwise that's a natural grip. Now, looking at that pic, does the choil seem like a necessary feature? Does it seem like the knife might be seriously unsafe without it, because the index finger would have absolutely nothing inhibiting a straight, smooth slide right on to the cutting edge of the blade? If you said, "hell no, that choil is totally superfluous" then congratulations, you could be a Spyderco knife designer. Because that choil is an aftermarket addition I made with a dremel tool. The knife was designed without one. I ground one in because it was a choice between that or throwing it in the garbage--I wouldnt give a knife with that kind of terrible, unsafe design to someone I knew, and I wouldnt feel right selling it either. I honestly couldnt believe my eyes (and finger) when i first picked that knife up. And now here i see that the Advocate is junk too? My god, im just giving up on Spyderco flippers. Id be thinking about an Advocate because i figured all Ti build would = decent quality. Guess not. Thanks for the heads up.

I didn’t know these had a problem. Glad MD put it on sale for me to find out here in discussions. I’m thinking mine is a gen or ver 2. Don’t want to take it apart to find out.

DzerhIts not. Yet another mistake in a Massdrop description. I guess the positive is that if someone later wants to return it, they can due to the misrepresentation its a good high performing steel, but it is not stainless

Well I was going to ask a question about M4 steel(currently EDC M390) but it sounds like this knife is a no-go from the start. Spyderco's higher end knives seem to be of questionable value these days with the exception of the PM2 which always seems to get high praise. I personally love the way the Resilience fits my hand and would love to see it with better blade steel and possible different handle/lock. The Military is close in size but tip down only kills it for me. Not sure why they do not make that clip up/down on it.

ponagathosThe Military is tip down because you wouldn't have been able to comfortably open it one-handed otherwise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VnaNPcVQVA

DmitryNI watched the video but do not buy that argument. I have the Resilience which is very close in size and shape and have never had an issue opening. I had to actually check and see if I was scooting it up in my hand because I never thought about it. I am not. When I grab a knife from my pocket, I do not grab it on the end like in the video with thumb and index finger. I insert my thumb inside the pocket along the hilt while my index finger lands under the pocket clip so my hand is in, or very close to, exactly where it need s to be to open the knife. Not sure if this in the usual for most people or not. As I said, I actually had to pay attention to how I did it to see why opening it was not a problem for me. I wonder if Spyderco has an explanation. The safety issue of the knife opening in your pocket...maybe. Maybe as in that is some kind of military requirement? That said, after decades, I do not recall that ever being an issue for me. So, still a tip up guy here. Even for big blades.

Generation 1! The one that had all the pivot bearing issues! No thanks.
Sometimes companies make mistakes, but for me it is more about how they handled the customers who bought these obviously inferior products saying "you adjusted the pivot, it's your problem now", essentially. My Mantra then became the only knife in my collection that you could basically destroy by hand tightening a screw. I refuse to pay for a defect, which is basically what I was told by CS. Now I buy Chinese knives like We and Kizer, with ZERO issues. I also buy ZT because of their CS and high quality. I do miss Spyderco knives a little, but I cant look past the poor treatment that was rendered to many customers...including me.

What a mish-mash of a knife... Frankly, I’m embarrassed for Spyderco. The infamous ‘hole’ appears to be all but worthless; the lanyard hole is too far down from the end of the handle; and, the clip can’t more misplaced. The blade material is a questionable choice, and there is no steel insert on the titanium frame lock to be in contact with the blade tang. Yet somehow, this is a $250 plus knife.............(wtf)

Having no experience with this knife, perhaps I over/under-stated my first impressions from the specs and images. But given all the Spyderco knives I have and had, this knife really appeared out of character for Spyderco. It really is not a knife I was/am drawn to. With that said, I am really glad this knife works for you!!
