During the September 11th attacks, New York City police officer John D’Allara gave his life to save countless others from the rubble. In his honor, Spyderco created the D’Allara rescue knife in 2003, made with sanctioned materials from the actual wreckage in the handle Read More
Yeah, knife laws suck in NYC. But, a bit of good news I few close friends who are police officers tell me that people who get arrested for carrying knives are either using it for illegal purposes or arrested for an unrelated charge and weapons charges is tacked on. I’m sure there are some exceptions. I work as an electrician and always have a folder with me. I sometimes forget that at any moment I could be stopped and arrested for a weapons charge. Unbelievably sad but true.
MManalangThat may be the case with decent cops... but the ones who are fishing for arrests/tickets/excuses to target someone will use an exposed pocket clip as a primary reason to stop and search. I've seen it happen once, but have heard plenty of stories about it happening (not just internet tales, I have an ex who lived in Brooklyn for many years)

$84 on Amazon with Free shipping. Come on now Massdrop, you're better than this.
While I love the cue-ball look of that lock ball, I'm not sure how well grabbing a ball to unlock the blade will work in practice. It would probably be more functional if they did something similar to the manix lock and put something grippy in front of the ball. But then they would have covered up the most visually interesting thing about the knife.
Seems like a reasonable price on a g10/s30v seki Spyderco, which of course means it's discontinued and this is a clearance deal. Get one while you can if you want it, it probably won't be back.
NotsurewhyibotherI have this knife and yes it is a pain to disengage the ball lock to close the knife. The knife is sweet though aside from this. I do not edc this for this reason I have mainly as a novelty.
I'll leave all the Hero and WTC discussion to others. As far as the knife goes I find it a bit heavier then it should be and disengaging the blade is not easy. The locking mechanism is one of my least favorite of any knives. There is a reason people are giving them away compared to the original cost.
The description was poorly worded. It should have said that in 2003, Spyderco created a limited edition using materials from the WTC in the handle. It was sanctioned. They don't hand out that material to just anybody.
This looked interesting and was cheaper than Amazon by about $40 but:
"...made with materials from the actual wreckage [of 9/11] in the handle."
That is pretty tasteless. Fetishizing a person (New York City police officer John D’Allara) is one thing, and that's a bit weird as well, but selling actual wreckage in the knife itself like it's a religious icon is going too far.
dingieThis version was not made with materials from the wreckage. Those were a limited run. This one is updated with different materials. And "fetishizing" is a bit extreme. Lots of companies pay homage to we've those lost in various events, through their products, knifemakers included. Of course, I get it if it's just not your thing. Personally, I think it is cool way to remember a fallen NYPD officer, and avid Spyderco collector.
Here is a link to the knife you are referring to. "The majority of the proceeds were donated to charities..." https://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=59
