My thoughts about the price: this knife has Japanese super-steel and Japanese G-10 scales; we know both materials are very expensive to manufacture and finish - just look at similarly outfitted Japanese made knives, and you'll see they are all in the same price brackets, or even more expensive (I did the research; there are several web sites specializing in Japanese cutlery and the prices are astounding, even for simple folders). The good news is that usually, the Japanese made Spyderco knives have outstanding fit and finish, and I think we should expect a great finished product.
I can only speculate that the "spider web" pattern further adds manufacturing costs? For sure this blade is more expensive to make than, say, a satin or brushed finish.
So in my mind, I know that the price is high (would have danced in the street if this was $120 to $150), but I am fairly certain (hoping?) it's not because of Massdrop and/or Spyderco are trying to gouge their fan base (because, let's be realistic, this is a knife that will almost entirely be sold to collectors and Spyderco fans). Sal Glesser from Spyderco certainly has a great relationship with the fan base, I can't imagine this being a ploy to sell overpriced knives.
Also, the fact that the Yen has seen so much devaluation in the past few years, means they (the Japanese factories) have to fork more money for their raw materials, for shipping, etc., and this ends up sending the prices of finished goods soaring (especially goods with a high level of raw materials costs).
Lastly, any way you look at this, the knife is going to become a super sought after collector's item with huge resale value (I think up to - perhaps? - twice the initial price within a few years). In fact, if I had the money, I would buy two, one to resell later and fund a grail, but I can't currently justify it (cough, cough significant other cough cough). So you're never going to "lose money" on this knife! You will, in my opinion, always be able to recoup your $200.
Otherwise don't buy it, no one forces anyone to buy this! Vote with your wallet! 😳
