The Endela may sound vaguely familiar. This folder’s name is a mashup of two of the most popular knives in the Spyderco lineup, the Endura and Delica Read More
Ya know what I say when I am told that a knife with a VG-10 blade is going to be gone soon? I say let it go... :-)
Or charge more and offer the knife with a K390'ish, or at least a non-ancient blade steel.
I really wanted to like the Endela. The Endura and Delica models always been my preferred "beater" knives. They can take it, and if you lose or damage one, they are easily replaced. No frills and purely utilitarian. I prefer them in some of the exotic steel offerings, but VG10 has a lot of great qualities for the money. As for the Endela, the ergonomics don't work as well for my hand as the other two models. It combines the somewhat bulky handle of the Endura with the limited blade length of the Delica. Kind of the worst of both IMO. Compared to the Endura, the Endela handle is just slightly shorter and yet it has nearly 1/2" less usable cutting edge. In the pocket the two knives feel the same to me, so for my purposes I'll stick with the Endura. As for purchasing a Spyderco from Drop, seems like there are better options. Internet retail sellers for knives are fiercely competitive and the better ones offer same day free shipping (no sales tax often) and the lowest legal pricing. They'll inspect your knife for QC before shipping if you ask. They accept returns.
DoubleEIt's actually the opposite for me, I was glad they came out with the Endela. 1/2" is a huge difference in terms of cutting edge even though it may not seem like it. But here in NYC we have a 4" knife rule. The Endura comes really close and I'm always worried that I'd get jammed up one day by some cop who doesn't care enough to take a ruler out and having to go to court and defend myself. So Endura is too big and Delica is too small. After reading your comment I actually took out the Endura and Endela and put them against side by side, and after some measurements the finger cutouts and handle dimensions are actually super similar if not identical. The only difference is the last part where your pinky rests is shorter on the Endela, but I have large/xl large hands and I have 1/2" to spare. But you are right though, when I can, I rather carry the Endura for the extra cutting edge.
So from that it looks like toxic effects start to be reported at 0.04mg/kg/day, which for a small adult (say 50kg) would be 2mg which at 1.5% of the composition of VG10 would require attrition of 133mg/day (over a long period of time. Which would mean losing a gram of steel every 7.5 days. That means my 20 year old VG10 calypso jr, at 54g, would have to wear at a rate that would have annihilated it in just over a year (clip and all) in order to shed enough cobalt at the rate associated with reported effects.
(I like casual calculations, too 😊)
My Caly jr, which was my edc for many years has worn 1-2mm at the edge and I reckon most of that was from sharpening. So all I can suggest is don’t worry, but maybe don’t sniff or slurp your slurry. 🤭
DomfuThe Caly is a great knife. Almost jumped on one.
The whole Vanax discussion piqued my interest. Unfortunately it’s still an uncommon steel that there’s not a lot of knife models using it.
For a couple of years I was searching and collecting knives including super steels. But gradually came to the realization that even if I found my Excalibur, it doesn’t mean that I liked the handle.
So eventually settled on a plain vanilla Cold Steel American Lawman in AUS 8. Had my preferred locking mechanism, ergos, non-metal handles, the solid thwack, and a field serviceable steel. Not my perfect knife (not a big fan of thumbstuds) but like I said, it’s not all about the blade steel. If I lose this model I’ll have dig up my back up model in CTS-XHP.
Davidsh331Tbh who buys knives on Drop. That's like buying knives from Walmart no ty lol.
Drop is amazing for their community/website ui and ux. I use it as a gallery and something nice in my email to peep. I tell people to do heavy research themselves and then buy from a knife website/eBay. I don't think there's anything I'd buy on Drop and I buy more things than anybody I know.
Wow, that's high praise! Right now I'm still enjoying my TRM atom and neutron. Unfortunately, as I know too well (being a knife addict) that will fade and I'm going to be itching to get the "new thing", this might be it and my first vanax.
MManalangI was the same exact way reading about knives 24/7 watching every video I could find about testing different knife Steels and you have it, I had about a collection of 15+ mid to high-end knives (about 3k in knives since 2010), I bought the spydiechef thinking it was my end game because lc200n seems to be the best realistic steel for day-to-day use with its corrosion resistance ease of sharpening etc.
When I got the Spydiechef I was like "OK this is my end game I'm so happy!" Then about two weeks later I found out about Vanax and how much more superior it was than any steel, even lc200n. Honestly ever since I got my van X I have had zero interest in looking at knives it's like it completely killed the excitement for me because I knew I had the most endgame steel I can think of. Or kill the excitement would be a bad term for it I would say rather it took all of my excitement for the possibilities and other knives and I put all the excitement into this knife as you can tell!
Not only is it Vanax... But the knife itself is PERFECT as an EDC. If you ever get it in your hands I want you to just sit down and think about how you would improve the knife I seriously haven't figured out what I could improve with the knife, it's the only product I've used that I think is just perfect as an EDC knife, its even better than the Spydie in cooking because of its thin blade. 😅
I believe I have made my argument that VG-10 is more than adequate a steel for EDC. If it can take everyday use for construction for years, it can take occasional use for EDC.
