VG-10? No thank you... A new knife offering with old steel? Why?

Davidsh331Because the Delica and Endura sell really well and they want to see if the Endela will be a success as well. Most people are not steel snobs that never use their knives and worry more about the vanadium content than if the knife is a good design.

Davidsh331whats wrong with vg10?? its a great steel that sharpens easily and takes a wicked keen edge.

CdoyleThe world evolved past VG-10 long ago. The fact that it sharpens easily also means that it likely requires sharpening more often. VG-10 is fine if you are just going to look at it, but if you are going to actually use it, why the old technology in a new release? Probably only because the Seki City plant has a crap load of it laying around. I'm standing on my position of waiting on a better steel offering before buying. There are too many other knife offerings out there to be buying VG-10 in today's market.

Davidsh331Lots of VG-10 Inventory in Japan that they are hoping we'll buy off of them? Otherwise, no clue... I replaced my Delica and Endura with ZDP, and sold my VG-10s.

Davidsh331I own plenty of super steels and enjoy them but also have no problem with "only" VG10 on an EDC knife. Most people will find it more than adequate and appreciate its properties i mentioned, including myself, and i much prefer VG10 to D2 which is common on budget folders nowadays. a higher end steel, while nicer and welcomed, will also drive up the price. everything is a compromise and if i need more edge retention i simply select a different knife appropriate to the task, but to each their own. personally i am more concerned with geometry, heat treat, and BTE thickness which plays much more of a role in edge retention than steel type anyhow. if M390 is all one will buy there are indeed plenty of other knives on the market.

CdoyleAnd that's why America used to be a free country, where to each there own. Now? Not so much...

Davidsh331Not sure i follow but if you are referring to the United States of America then you are in the freest country there is already. One that allows discussions such as this thread about folding knives and their steels where people voice their opinions and may not always agree, you know, being a free country and all.. Ultimately, there is a market for VG10 which is apparent by the offerings and sales of Spyderco along with other manufacturers as well as users regardless whether one feels VG10 is inadequate or not. the thing about a free country is the buyer can decide what to buy or not to buy but as long as Spyderco keeps selling SEKI City lockbacks i imagine VG10 is here to stay for the most part. they do have some K390 steel variations coming out soon (carbon steel) but otherwise i haven't heard of any other steels for the FRN lineup yet. hopefully the endela does receive more offerings like the delica/enduras lines as variety is the spice of life.

Davidsh331Why the hate with VG-10? Unless you are cutting boxes or sisal rope all day I would agree with you hands down. But for EDC where the knife will stay in your pocket 95% of the time, VG-10 is more than adequate. Back in the day when I worked as an electrician, I used the stretch In VG-10 as my primary knife. It got tremendous amount of use during the day, in the end I would put it through several passes across fine sandpaper wrapped around a 2x4 and it was screaming sharp again for the next day. Plus, putting a super steel on a blue collar knife will just drive the price up and some are very difficult to sharpen.

MManalangBut boxes and rope is what most regular folks use their EDCs for... With that kind of a sharpening protocol, how many Stretches did you go through in a year?

On job sites I use fine sand paper and a block of unpolished granite I keep in my truck. (Which I use for all my cutting tools). After years of sharpening, only about a millimeter or two of blade has worn away. I picked up a stretch 2 years later but It never got much use. I like the feel of a nicely worn tool.

MManalangYou're not making much of an argument in favor of VG-10, but rather just your crude way of maintaining their edges of your tools which, btw, look a bit more worn away in your pictures than you describe.

Davidsh331I believe I have made my argument that VG-10 is more than adequate a steel for EDC. If it can take everyday use for construction for years, it can take occasional use for EDC.
