warriorscotWhere do you live that you get your knives taken away if stopped by authorities? Sounds like a shitty situation. I've been there but I've stood my ground. I got a paramilitary 2 I got here that I used to remove some plastic from a street dog a friend of mine rescued, which prompted some civilian freedom police types to call the cops on me. They argued it was a military weapon because of the camo handles. Needless to say, they didn't get my knife.

AntibacterialPeople that are afraid of everything. They see you using a knife, you must be a thug. They know you legally carry a gun, they report you anyways - you must be up to no good. They hear you play The Last of Us, they call 911 and accuse you of masterminding some Hostal type shit...
To a point I can appreciate their concern and at least they're keeping an eye out, but people should mind their own business unless they have a good reason to believe real factual foul play.
Anyways, Lucky (the pup) is doing great!

sprk1Pretty much all the European countries will do it, in particular here in the UK in the big cities they will do random stop and searches. A locking knife is technically an arrestable offence and you have to justify carrying it in court after the fact, although good manners and an actual good reason will often mean you just get it taken off you and a telling off(military ID helps too). And even legal stuff(non locking under 3" will still potentially get confiscated if they don't like it.

Ogen_the_MaticCheers, fixed it in my OP. Yeah I would love to see some more of the laws repealed, to be honest you could probably make a legal case on health and safety law, but it would be iffy and cost a lot of money.

sprk1The firearms things actually make a lot of sense, it's a bit of a pain but it doesn't actually stop me from shooting it just means I have to jump through a few more hoops to do it i.e. no cutting any corners on safety. The knife laws are a pain, but ironically they were caused by the gun laws because once the police were able just to out and out put a bullet in you for even having a gun in public the criminals switched to knives.

warriorscotI was under the impression that you can't own a gun as a private citizen. Is this not the case? In my experience weapons of any kind are a gigantic deterrent for criminals and not allowing people to arm themselves for their own and their family's protection is doing people a disservice. Gun importation has been banned for a couple of years where I live, so the current stock is financially prohibitive... needless to say crime has soared since then.

sprk1No you can own as many as you like, you just need a license and you need to meet the requirements(have a need e.g. farmer, hunter, sport and be able to operate and store safely) indeed you can actually safely own some things in the UK you can't in the US(like specialist weapons) and the only major restrictions is to handguns. Using a firearm in any way for self defence 9 times out of 10 would be a criminal offence here, gun laws bite both ways so criminals can expect to be either shot by police or be detained indefinitely and people who would try to use abuse the privilege of owning one face the same, keeps everyone safe as violent crime is pretty low you might get robbed but they won't hurt you as it's prohibitive.
In most studies the presence of guns in the population is no deterrent on crime rates the US and Russia are both perfect examples of large developed nations that have little gun control but higher crime than most of the EU. High crime is largely caused by poor policing, if you need a gun because the police are ineffective then it doesn't matter if guns are or are not present.
Anyway things are just a bit different here, policing and punishment operates on a slightly different methodology than it does in say the US. It works for us to keep crime down, but the downside is things like the crappy knife laws.
