Part of Spyderco’s budget line of folders, the Polestar features the company’s signature leaf-shaped blade and round thumb hole. The blade is an American-made BD1 steel: a high-carbon chromium steel with high hardness and excellent wear resistance Read More
This is a very nice knife. I have had and used it for some time. Spyderco doesn't skimp on quality anywhere in its line. They designed it to occupy a low/mid price point that allows us to carry and use a knife we can lose, have confiscated or wind up in an evidence locker without excessive regret. R
Bd1 steel is really good. It's comparable to d2 in edge retention but easier to sharpen and more stainless.
The company in China that makes this for spyderco has invested in lots of steel options and expensive heat treatment equipment.
The blade profile provides excellent slicing capabilities. It's a great budget knife with excellent steel. An alternative I'd recommend is the Ontario rat 1 in d2 steel. I do believe cold steel also make some in bd1 steel as well (and xhp which is even better) for great prices.
This is a great buy despite the penny pinches here. The steel is excellent. As always there is plenty of other good options too.
Anyways if you can find a better price it's a good knife, grab it. But don't hesitate if you want a good working knife that's a slicer with really good steel for the cost.
This comment is not about MAP price and how you can find it the same price everywhere else. This comment is more about Spyderco pricing in general. I just don't think it's competitive with other offering out there. At $60(or $45 without pouch) you get G-10 handle, liner-lock and CTS-BD1. For a bit more money, at $100 you can buy a Kizer Guru(also on massdrop right now) with titanium handle, framelock and arguably much more premium CPM S35VN steel. Not to mention they also have all the nice ceramic ball-bearing and detent, as well as much better fit & finish.
Even at $50-60 price range there are a lot of other options out there. E.g. Kershaw Blur at $50. You can even get a Cold Steel Code 4 for similar price with CTS-XHP steel. Add ~$10-$20 you can buy an American Lawman, Delica, Endura, Manix 2 or Stretch.
Even their Taichung TW models are overpriced nowadays considering the other options out there. it used to be ground breaking, but no longer the case imo, considering you now have WE, Reate, Kizer, Lionsteel and other up and coming China & Italian makers. Even t other makers i.e. Has stepped up their quality and offer great product for great price. You can get most of cold steel's cts-xhp models for less th $100 nowadays.
Bottom Line Up Front: It you have any interest in this sort of knife, join this drop now. At the delete the optional case delivered price of $47.72 (in the USA), this is about as good a price you will find. I recently bought a Spyderco Polestar for $45 delivered. The sale lasted less than a minute and after my purchase, the price went back up. I am very pleased with the quality of the Polestar and it may be the perfect every day carry knife. The pivot and body screws are T8 Torx, and the pocket clip screws are T6. Mine had no thread locker at all, so I added the blue medium Loctite. The lanyard hole is large. The scales have just the right amount of grip without shredding pockets. The pivot bushings are phosphor bronze. As with many knives, you should be prepared to add a tiny amount of blue Loctite to all the screws and adjust the pivot screws before the Loctite sets.
At around $48 it doesnt seem like such a bad deal once you opt out of the carry case and save the $15. Anyone have any experience with this knife? Looks like a useful little blade.
