Finally buying a Spyderco for the sole reason of finding out why they get dropped more than any other manufacturer. Still curious why they're so popular when other companies make knives from similar or equal material for way less. Any reasons???
Builder209Simply put, Spyderco is an excellent blend of performance, quality, and ergonomics. You'll note that I didn't include looks. :-)
They are usually optimized towards being a knife, as in, they cut things very well. They often seem oddly shaped at first, but will usually quickly grow on you with use. The fit and finish is often far better than anything else in the price range. And finally, they are a company that communicates well with their clientele. Sal, the owner, often is carrying the pre-production prototype of whatever knife is coming out next. Good way to make sure your company is making a quality product, seems to me.
Manix 2 for SHTF, Paramilitary 2 for EDC, and Sage X for fancy dress. Seems like a plan to me!
Builder209To be fair, Kershaws are probably the best bang-for-your-buck knives out there - KAI, the company that owns Kershaw and ZT, is absolutely enormous compared to most other knife companies, and can deal in far greater quantities, allowing for cheaper pricing. Walk into a Walmart, and you probably won't find any Spydercos, but there's always some Kershaws.
As far as this knife goes, I love it. The Sage 2 is also nice, but this one is a bit lighter and much cheaper - unless you really like Titanium, this is probably the better deal.
Builder209If you ever get your hands on a Spyderco Delica which is a mid-range Spydie, you will know what Spyderco is all about. I have a Delica with the Emerson Wave feature, and several other Spydercos, and the Delica is the most comfortable by far. Just melts into your hand. The Sage series is a fantastic intro for you. I have the Sage 4, and it is the most overlooked version of the lot. It's a beautiful knife! Each one in the Series has a different locking mechanism, it's a tribute to the different designers.
Builder209I have a bunch of Kershaws and they make a really good product. But Spydercos ooze quality. There is not one of my Kershaws that compares to my shittiest Spyderco. Not in action, not in strenght, not in comfort. That being said the massdrop blur is also one of my fav EDCs, but I can't in good conscience say its better than Spydercos.
