Nice macropad, can work with VIAL
It should come with VIAL firmware out of the box. I had to spend some time to create one. Feel free to use: hex + sources zip. Supports backlight configuration.

I'm not sure there is a way to do it in software controls. The device doesn't have a proper LED driver to use per-key RGB matrix and all the LEDs seem to be wired in underglow configuration. Maybe there is some way to create a custom matrix driver to handle the under-key LEDs separately, but I'm not an expert here, sorry. Feel free to experiment with the sources and see what you'll find out.

Small yet powerful, versatile and fun!
I got this little keypad in its first version as a gift to my son and immediately regretted not getting one for me. When this version came out, I knew it was going to be fun. RGB lighting and key backlight and hot-swappable are not the only strong points here. Its QMK compatibility makes it very flexible and useful for a 3-key macropad. Pros:
  • QMK programmable makes it really useful.
  • RGB light and backlight looks awesome.
  • Lots of support from a growing fan base.
Vial-compatible thanks to firmware developed by fans (@JetSerge, @Itscbo
  • , etc.)

Cons:
  • A bit confusing to program since the tutorial is not as clear as it should be. You must resort to the comments section and read ALL of it. Lots of tips and useful links to customize this little beauty.
  • Acrylic monoblock is solid but so light the cable can move it or flip it upside down if not handled with care. I'm no caveman so this is not a problem for me, but I can see it's possible.
  • RGB underside lights are so brilliant, and I mean eye-piercing brilliant, the switch backlight can barely be seen.
  • RGB control is only possible after programming the keys to do so. Lights are not controllable right out-of-the-box and the default nuclear-explosion red setting will make your eyes tear. On the bright side (bah-dum, psss!) it can light a small room to look like the bridge of the Enterprise on red alert!
  • RGB, again, is not separate from the switch backlight and the latter is not controllable without creating a new firmware. If you turn the RGB off, the switch lights turn off too. Toggle Backlight, Backlight +/- qmk commands are not responding, at least in mine.

TL;DR: Even with more cons than pros, this macro (micro?) pad is worth the extra time invested in customizing it. I'll buy again when I have the chance just to have a hackable extra unit. I love it!

Unfortunately the Switch LEDs and Underglow LEDs are on the same circuit. So they're subject to the same control methods even though traditionally they might be different. Nothing I tried could allow the Underglow LEDs to be seen as a separate control from the backlight. If you dig into QMK you learn that there are 4 different but similar light features; normally a keyboard with lights on both sides might use 2 data pins to provide control for "Backlight" and "Underglow". In this case the Key V2 only uses a single data pin for all 5 LEDs so they are controlled by the same light settings. That said, in theory you can still control the LEDs individually as they are "addressable". So if you start your keymap from the one I've created you can probably sort out a method to control the LEDs how you want. See docs here: https://docs.qmk.fm/#/feature_rgblight?id=functions

Great to use for music shortcuts

Love the ease of programming and overall quality of the deck. Although acrylic, it looks and feels solid, although the cable provided can lift it if not placed completely flat. Currently using it as playPause Next Back for background music when on games. Comes with relatively satisfying key switches. RBG lighting is decent. Works a treat as copy paste, or can customise to pretty much anything else.

Macro's are a must
I am predominantly a pc gamer and audio enthusiast. However, that does not mean I do not appreciate quality keycaps and mech key products. Macro's like this are a must-have for people who enjoy consuming media while playing games. Remapping these to fast-forward rewind and play/pause makes it perfect for my media habits!

CoryCobraI suspect I'll probably end up doing the same so I can just completely control Youtube from the macropad. Save desktop space when I'm just passively watching something.

Needs an update for QMK.
I'm going to tear it a new one because it's a three button macropad and it does what it's supposed to. I will say that the install instructions need to be updated with a firmware that has use of all the RGB instead of disabling the backlight because it wasn't there on the V1. what I found worked for me is grabbing the json from the setup and uploading it to kbfirmware and then setting layers with controls of the RGB_MOD and RGB_HUI and in the settings section there is a portion for the WS2812 LEDs increase it from 2 to 5 and it will give you functionality of all the leds. But yeah please drop UPDATE THE FIRMWARE. that is all

Fantastic but why not wireless?
Cool and fun accessory. The only drawback is that it is an extra cable on the desk. It's a pity that it doesn't connect via Bluetooth

Very cool idea
Very cool idea with a good build quality. Makes for a nice desktop trinket, and is actually useful after remapping the key macros.

Well-built programmable 3-key macropad
Build quality is great, what you see is what you get and I consider that to be a good thing in this case. The default firmware of just ctrl + c / v is cute and good for a joke, but honestly not actually useful whatsoever... But what's great is it's easy to flash new firmware via QMK (https://config.qmk.fm/#/massdrop/thekey_v2/LAYOUT) and with some clever use of layers you can get a ton of functionality out of it. Media controls, macros, and shortcuts are super easy to add with the configurator and really get some daily use out it. Bonus points for the stack overflow key. Well made and clean print.
