tl;dr: Fan of ST? Buy this and make a decision to end or continue after a half dozen plays. Early expansions can be had cheaply on clearance at tons of places.
The Fantasy Flight FlightPath makes this game enjoyable. The models are non-scale, and of general lower quality than those from FF for X-Wing/Armada/everything else. I have the base ST:AW plus an additional 6ish additional models, and it plays pretty well. I am happy with it overall, and the big upside is that older expansion waves from this are available from various FLGS/OLGS at half list or lower in the clearance bins. The installed base of players is significantly smaller than SW:XW/SW:A, but if you are a fan of any of the Star Trek iterations, there's a great chance you'll love this. The pricing is pretty good, and adding two more packs for $11 is a good deal, even if they are random. AngelBaker is correct in saying that WizKids is kinda...unspectacular.

Honestly, I'm using all my willpower to say No to this drop and game series (for now) -- Massdrop first sucked me into the boardgaming vortex via Star Wars miniatures boardgames (first X-wing, then Imperial Assault, and then Armada, along with all the bundled expansions and add-on waves for each! Hopefully there will be a future drop for Star Wars Rebellion...*hint hint*), and also getting into this series on top of all the other drops I'm now in would be far too taxing on the wallet, especially with all the expansions involved!! ;)
It does look like a pretty good game for fans of X-wing, and the missions + ship customization + IP fit with game mechanics work in Star Trek Attack Wing's favor...

Ultimately, the *right* answer is to probably start collecting both series of games (Star Wars AND Star Trek), especially if you're a fan of both franchises, haha! :)

timechangeStay far away from this game. Mechanically its fun, but WizKids is a PoopShow of a company, and the way they release things is annoying, with the league and event promos being more powerful and highly priced on the secondary market. X-wing has a much stronger installed player base, and its just a better game.
