I've been lucky enough to play both X-Wing and Armada. As anytime Armada shows up it seems to bring some questions, maybe this can help.
- Armada is longer game, takes a game or two to learn the rules. But you get to take command of things on a much broader scale. Not only Star Destroyers, but the squadrons of TIE fighters that defend her. If you like long games (around 2h) and playing with a core group of friends who don't mind long games. You'll likely prefer Armada (as I do).
- X-Wing is easier to pickup and play for those unfamiliar with the game. If you want to play with random people and/or people who might only get to play once or twice. Or friends that prefer lighter games that don't take as long (30min-1h) X-Wing is probably the better buy.
- Either will need purchasing of a few expansions to get the most out of them. For Armada I'd recommend Gladiator Star Destroyer, Rebel Assault Frigate Mark II, and a squadron pack for each side. This will get you going with access to at least one of each available ship. For X-Wing... 2nd Core set, Imperial Aces, and Rebel Aces will enable playing the standard 100 point games.
