Steelseries mice are terribly overpriced in the first place so don't expect too great of a deal for either of these unless you're in a place with unreasonable SS prices.

ExitSo what is this reasonably priced half mice of similar or better quality you are comparing this to? I haven't found that Steelseries is more expensive than it's competitors.

ApplesThe Logitech G502 is a cheaper and better mouse...if you're right handed.

FuzzI was expecting someone to say Logitech. I don't disagree, I wouldn't say they make Steelseries look overpriced, I mostly see Logitech as being more of a no nonesense brand with less bells and whistles, but I tend to dislike the design of their products. They look a bit like toys to me, not a jab at the build quality or anything, but I don't dig their aesthetic as much as I do Steelseries.

ApplesYeah I can appreciate that, I do like their clean and no nonsense designs, some of the Logitech models do look like gimmicky toys, but at the end of the day what's important is the internals. The Pixart sensor in the G502 is probably the best available on the market to manufacturers currently.

FuzzWhat are you using your mouse for? I honestly haven't had a situation where I felt that the sensor was lacking, it's mostly comfort, design as well as buttons and button placement.

ApplesAside from the usual FPS gaming, I have dual monitors (2560x1080 and 2560x1440) and I use relatively high dpi settings, that's when the problems with sensors and even the mouse chassis become really obvious. Pixel precision is also an issue, especially when you need to touch things up in photoshop (or land that super long distance head shot.)
At 5000 DPI and up (which I used to use the Xai exclusively at, disabling all the smoothing and input correction in the firmware) some of the really bad mice would reveal serious flaws, like chassis flexing (Lachesis) when you click your mouse your cursor would dip and move you off target significantly.
I haven't managed to use the Sensei beyond 3200DPI, it's just too twitchy and inaccurate. If you try for example to correct Red Eye in a photo or lasso an object at 5000DPI and up, you will see the problem with most mice which have higher DPI sensors, the higher DPI settings are blatantly unusable due to jitter or acceleration.
The worst sensors I've seen in the last few years have been on the Razer Lachesis and the Madcatz/Saitek Cyborg RAT mice, some of the models sensors jitter so badly, your cursor is visibly dancing on screen.
Generally in my experience over the years (I used to be a retailer of gaming peripherals) Avago sensors were good. Phillips were terribad. Pixart sensors seem to be the current king of the hill.
If you're mousing at 2000 DPI or below, I reckon it doesn't really matter what mouse you use, you are not likely to see any issues or experience any significant advantages/disadvantages with most modern mice.

FuzzGotcha, I don't tend to work with high DPI, so I suppose that's why I haven't had to rely on the sensor. I have a Wacom tablet so I'd never dream of using a mouse to do anything in photoshop, besides adjusting filters or masks. I now understand that my requirements are based on comfort and design. Thank you.

ApplesI use an older Intuos 4 in my workflow also, but sometimes I'm just too lazy to break it out for a quick minor touch up, I don't do it for a living though, so my tablet is not always set up on my desk.

FuzzI have officially decided to not purchase this mouse due to the quality of the wireless. Might looks into logitech, don't quite like how their wireless ones look, but the G303 looks pretty cool.
