As someone that has carried knives since childhood, and collected custom knives for nearly 30 years -- there are many people that buy $200 knives. There are many people that buy knives costing multiples of that price, and there are people that amass large collections of custom knives.
On any given day on a knife forum or discussion group someone will ask what a $500 knife can possibly do better than a $50 knife and there will be a debate. No opinions will change. It happens again the next day. The same discussion happens on watch forums, fishing forums, pen forums, about musical instruments, cycling equipment, etc, etc.
whacko asked what someone does with a $140 top. I thought it was a rhetorical question but now I'm not certain. Customers spin tops on bars while hanging out with friends, at restaurants waiting for a burger, with their kids instead of watching tv, and at work while on sales calls. Spinning tops has a pretty low entry point for skill -- a child can do it. Getting 14-16min spins takes some practice, though. A lot of my customers are also into balisong, yo yo, and begleri. Tops are more discrete and draw less attention.
I make tops at a number of price points and this is by far the most popular. As with anything, custom tops aren't for everyone, and you have to decide if they appeal to you.
VicN, I spin top everywhere and have for years. I assure you -- no one will see you spinning a top and think "that person is showing off their money."
Thanks for the discussion everyone!

FiddleFoundryHi Steven - I'm probably not a buyer here because I'm just not that into tops, but just wanted to say that it's very cool that you take the time to respond to potential customers here and have very well thought out points. I can also appreciate finely made custom stuff in whatever form that may take. Keep up the good work!

FiddleFoundryYou're absolutely right. I really like that you take the time to respond to your potential customers as well. I guess I was just frustrated that I can't have cool things like this because the price range is a little out of my budget. I can definitely appreciate a custom made top or anything custom machined for that matter. It is, as many of the things you make, truly a work of art.
