Sturmanskie is known for its watches that harken back to the Cold War era. A good example is the Heritage Polar Automatic watch: a true 24-hour timepiece that completes just one full revolution each day Read More

The watch is pretty confusing: it has "автомат" (automatic) written on the dial, the specs say it's automatic yet the description says it's manual wound. What's up massdrop?

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with this person of which you speak. What watch company does he run?

Not surprised. He runs a small company--not as popular as he thinks. Their best known model features the "Growing Nose" complication; every six seconds, it gets longer:

I'd have to see the internals on this one to determine if they actually took the movement apart and cleaned it up versus just slapping Vostok's 24h movement in a decently-finished case with different dial. I know for a fact that Vostok-Europe does this. They take Vostok movements and clean & polish them up so they run really well and put them in nice modern cases. I have one of their Submarine models and it's pretty good. If they don't do any work on the standard Vostok 24h movement then I'd skip this one if I were you and just get a US ~$100 24h Amphibia model direct from Vostko itself.

Its not even a 24hour watch, otherwise 15:00 would be at 3pm, 18:00 would be at 6pm, 21:00 at 9pm etc, so I dont know what those number shall indicate, maybe is ticking different in Russia.

Kind of a whacky drop. You can buy an actual Raketa or other vintage cold war era 24 hour watch on Ebay for a quarter of this. If I was going to buy a new watch why would I want one that just kind of looks like a vintage model, but not a specific one?

you may be right about build quality. I own several vintage Soviet microphones (made in Tula!) and have owned a couple Soviet watches. There is a certain lack of refinement to some of the construction on those. This may be a more precise instrument, but there is an offbeat charm to the actual Soviet era watches. I really like the more artsy looking ones with angular/geometric motifs. This looks a lot more Western European in the fonts, colors and styling.

In all honesty I agree with you. I guess I was just trying to justify my own enthusiasm for more modern Soviet pieces.

Not entirely against 70s/80s Soviet nostalgia, but not sure I’m as interested at a price I’d expect pay for a current model Seiko.

Why is it called Heritage Polar on Drop when it's Heritage Arctic everywhere else for the same product numbers? (This applied to a previous drop. Seems to be fixed now.)
