mbeeezyUltralight is where your base weight is under 10lbs. To achieve that weight you typically only take essentials, put up with some discomfort, and/or spend a lot of money. This is not an essential, and a table is typically VERY low on a backpacker's choice of luxuries. What can you do 5 inches further off the ground, than you can't already do on the ground? It's dumb af

publicThanks for mansplaining that to me. Funny how you assumed I don't know what ultralight means simply because I understand basic economics - that is, if people buy it, you keep selling it! At any rate, I'm so glad you don't need this and think you're above people who might want it. It's a shame for the rest of us that you can't do without the Internet for complaining.

publicYeah, and you're being a whiny dick about it...so knock it off. None of the stuff they sell here in the UL category is remotely close to being something light enough an ultralight backpacker would take with them out into the woods. C'mon. Quit kidding yourself. You seem to be a purist...so why don't you go troll the lightweight backpacking forums and go sit on the ground with your one foot square piece of Tyvek that you've cut the corners off of so it's the same shape as your ass to cut grams. Or why don't you go grab some moss to wipe your ass with since toilet paper is too heavy? Or why don't you leave your stove at home and eat Powerbars so you don't have to carry the extra weight of fuel and a stove?

mbeeezyI didn't think his comment was out of line at all in a comment thread devoted to ultralight items. This drop section gets 5 lb tents posted in it all the time and similar comments get posted ad nauseum. It is a common thing here. It wasn't until you decided it was directed at your gender that it became an issue.
And before you think MY comment is somehow an attempt to mansplain, I would direct you to MY picture and my daughter, who has made me a rabid feminist by her very existence. I know the phenomenon exists, it just doesn't exist everywhere all the time.

DrThrobDrThrob - your comments are usually spot on, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you haven't noticed that we now have an Outdoors Community. The heavier items (like the 5lb tents) were testing in Ultralight, sold well, and provided the seeds to grow an Outdoors Community. Now those tents are listed there, and we've been able to refocus on Ultralight and Lightweight stuff. This is the first time this discussion has popped up in the months since we started the Outdoors Community, which I find quite funny because the product in question weight 3.6 ounces.

RenegadePilgrim"None of the stuff they sell here in the UL category is remotely close to being something light enough an ultralight backpacker would take with them out into the woods." Does that include the OR Helium II jacket, MH Ghost Whisperer, EE quilts, ZPacks gear, Rab jackets and tarps, Vargo, Snow Peak, and so on? Pretty much any week of the year you could find nearly everything here that you would need to outfit yourself for an UL trip. So I find your statement to be incorrect, though I'm wondering how you came to that conclusion. Also, I'm curious as to why there is so much attitude in your post? This is a friendly place - let's keep it that way.

publicWhy the judgement? If someone can carry this whopping 3.6oz luxury item and still have a light pack, why do we have to trash talk their decision? Maybe they have back problem and can't bend over to prepare food. Maybe they're a foodie and desire only the best food prep facilities. Maybe they camp in a boggy area with wet ground and no reliable hard surface to prepare food upon. Maybe there are other creative reasons to use this table that we don't know about. I don't need this table, but obviously Steve from Suluk46 has found people who want this. I applaud him for making something unique, simple, elegant and light, even if it is for a small group of people in an already niche category.

FuzzymuzzleUm, there already is. It's called the Outdoors Community.
Again, why is a 3.6oz item so heavy that it couldn't be part of the UL Community? It's probably a luxury item for most people, but honestly most of the best gear out there is becoming that way - full size and 2.5" thick sleeping pads instead of foam pads, full coverage tents (no longer just a tarp), and so on.

DannyMilksI noticed the change and i appreciate the feedback. I was speaking to the larger habit that those of us who tend toward weight savings making the same tired comment on these threads for the purposes of the argument at large. My only actual question about the table was in an earlier comment (one of the first on this item) in that I wasn't sure what the utility of it would be in my pack.

publicWe have an Outdoors Community already, but maybe you missed that announcement? We started it up in February and you were auto-enrolled to get those products in your email. That being said, I would still consider this item UL even if you think it is unnecessary. It's a lightweight, packable product made in Canada by a cottage manufacturer, with the input of one of the most respected UL designers (John Abela @abela).
My question is: How is a 3.6oz item grounds for changing UL to BP? If 3.6oz puts you over the edge from what you consider UL to regular Backpacking, then you have really strict standards and no margin for error. Most people could carry an extra 100 grams of anything and still consider themselves to be Ultralight. This is absolutely a luxury item, but people do that all the time. Heck, even crazy ultralighters like Ryan Jordan carry chairs with them. If he can fit a chair in his pack and still go light, then great. Who are we to judge? To each their own.

DannyMilksI just want you to rename the community to backpacking, all of which this stuff falls under. You don't put typewriters in the mech keys community because it's mechanical and has a keyboard. This is light and could be brought backpacking (for whatever reason), but it's disingenuous to call this unnecessary item ultralight. Food prep isn't ultralight, and could be done in lighter ways (like cutting ingredients at home). You shouldn't be camping in boggy areas anyways unless you like water in your tent.
I got pissed because she didn't address my argument, assumed I was an idiot who isn't aware of supply and demand, and told me I was sexist. Shitty arguments get shitty responses.

publicI sense your frustration, and I'm sorry that this conversation hasn't benefited you with helpful answers. I honestly don't think the discussion has gone the way that anybody wanted it too. I think we all got of track, made some questionable statements and personal comments.
And to your point, even if the product itself is actually very light, you don't see it as necessary and therefore it shouldn't be considered ultralight. It's a luxury item, so to speak, which would fall under conventional backpacking. Is this correct?

DannyMilksYes. If I had a need for a table, I'd get the 2qzq tree table for roughly the same price. I agree with the others that this is a cool design, but adding more weight to my bag for something that could be done 5 inches lower on the ground doesn't make sense to me. I understand why some people could bring chairs, as it adds a level of comfort and functionality. But if you're already squatting on the ground to cut/use something, 5 inches doesn't make sense to me. Just cut down a small wooden cutting board for the same effect. At least the tree table lets you choose the height.

DannyMilksNot everything here is what I would consider UL. Lightweight, yes. UL, no. However, Danny, if you would like to keep this a friendly place, then maybe you need to do a better job of admin on comments. You have one angry man (public) who is pissed off that this is called Ultralight, who has attacked another member who happens to be female and decide to tell me to be friendly? I guess I didn't realize this is just another place for men to sit in their man caves and scratch their balls while grunting approval on what kind of gear they like or don't. If so, then I'll stop telling people to come here to buy things.
