For those concerned about the harvesting badger hair, Horsehair is an amazing compromise. Horsehair, in terms of functionality, falls between badger's softness and boar's backbone. It was actually the go-to shaving soap medium for a very, very long time, but was outlawed in the US (and many other places) in the early 1900s due to horsehair brushes coming in from China, that were not properly cleaned, resulting in an absurd amount of Anthrax cases. Now, however, Horsehair is starting to come back, and is properly taken care of.

On the side of Cruelty, horse hair for brushes are, generally speaking, collected during regular and necessary horse maintenance. Maintenance that would need to take place regardless of whether or not the hair's being collected.

As you can see, it's a significant improvement over badger if animal care is your concern.

I own horse hair, badger hair, and horse badger mix brushes. I'm concerned by the cruelty, but it's clearly not stopping me from owning a badger or two. It does factor into what I look for in a purchase, however.

Calmb4tehpwnThank you. I had never heard of horse hair shaving brushes. I'll have to look into that option.
