I got a Suunto Core with the black screen maybe five years ago and boy is that thing hard to read. Even in full daylight the lcd has poor contrast, and when it starts to get dim, it's almost impossible to read until it's really dark and then the backlight allows you to see it. Also, it eats batteries; I put a new one in this watch every 3-6 months, compared to every 2-3 years for my other dozen or so battery-driven watches (I've got a beater Timex that has gone four years on the original battery).
