Just bought my second one. The <F> that I picked up about a year ago is the best nib that I own. At $69 this is one of those Drops that is actually a great value. The design is much more conservative in real life than it appears in the photos. If you've been itching for a great Sailor nib in a great pen then you won't go wrong here.
Just in case anyone is curious about using the music nib, I have a Taccia Spectrum with a music nib and it's ended up as my go-to daily writer (much to my surprise). There's decent line variation with a lot of flow, but you can get some hard starts with highly saturated inks. If the line is a little fat for your tastes, reverse writing works extremely well.
palinodeThe writing sample shown makes it look like the music nib just writes as a broad, can you explain in more detail what you mean when you say you can get good line variation? Is it flexy, or does it actuallyhave much more of a variation between downstrokes and cross strokes?
RichhummelThere's no flex on the Taccia music nib. It writes much like a broad stub, with thin cross strokes and thick downstrokes, varying from a double broad to medium-fine. Reverse writing produces a slightly thinner but crisper line. It can be a challenge to write with if you tend to roll the pen. ETA: I took a look at the writing sample, and you're right - it doesn't show off the qualities of the music nib at all. I have no idea why they did that.
Taccia is an interesting company in that they make pens with Sailor nibs that compete directly with similarly priced Sailor products. Their big selling points are they come in metal instead of just plastic (plus or minus depending on the feel you like, since its not like Sailor plastics are bad, they are among the best around) and some interesting designs. They also had the US market to themselves for awhile, since its only now that Sailor is starting to make more of their steel nib pens available here. The issue is still the price if you are someone who is ok buying from the grey market. You can get a Sailor with the same nib for a bit less or a gold nib for a bit more. For this drop, however, the big selling point is a Sailor music nib at a very low price. (And its not like Sailor steel nibs are bad, there is not really much of a difference in feel between their top of the line steel, 14k and 21k nibs beyond the resistance to corrosion and special options).
KlemnoreI've had the blue for some time and it's held up great. Nibs are made by Sailor so they are excellent as well. Looks like only a $10. savings if you want it faster from a pen retailer.
winelover215Thanks @winelover215 ! I was just checking that. For that minimal difference I'll just purchase elsewhere.
Great info on the durability and nib. Thanks!
Cheers
