It would be nice you could use it as a flac/mp3 music player

OneLoveYou actually can. It reads .wav and there is a headphone jack and a volume dial.

I have one, and am happy with it—very quiet noise floor, easy to use. I especially like the dual-level recording feature (often get clipping from people who don't know how to use a mic or loud transients closer to the recorder than the subject). Only suggestion is to pick up a P520E power adapter for times you might run many hours where battery changes would be too intrusive. Also, note that the DR-100mkIII does not come with a USB cable.

Lsh12Lsh12, can you power it from an external USB battery pack, Mophie, Anker, Aukey, Kmashi, etc? My Tascam DR-60D and 70D both work great when plugged into any external USB battery pack.

Really tempted by this. Transom likes it (https://transom.org/2016/tascam-dr-100mkii-2/) but seems to suggest that it should be cheaper (possibly cheaper than Massdrop can offer).
Anyone used this and the Zoom H5 care to ccomment on how they compare?

For my use, older Tascam model's mic records in very very low volume. I had to increase gain significantly. Newer models might be better.
Zoom here offers multiple capsules such as shotgun mic. It is a different animal.

Dr.McCoyGreetings from Vulcan, Dr. McCoy: The review you linked to is for the Mark 3 model, which it says retails for $400. The Massdrop is currently for the Mark 3 model at $350, which is a slight deal. The Mark 2 is obviously cheaper, but you don't get nearly the functionality of the 3. I hope this is helpful. Live long and prosper, Dr. McCoy.

So tempted. I have the Tascam DR-60D and DR-70D. This one has better preamps than those two so it should capture cleaner recordings.

pmsoundsI'm saving my pennies for a pre 6 by SD. I checked BSW.com and reverb.com but no f4 available. reverb gets some listings once in a while. I scavenge the used market for the gentlely used and well cared for and cheap! I have a sweet spot for teac/tascam products especially reel to reel with dbx.

Are there any great drops for field recording mics for wildlife and other types of field recording people have seen?

Does anyone know if you can control levels for each channel independently?

DuffdaddyYes. There is a switch to switch between both channels or L or R. What you cannot do is supply phantom to only 1 channel.

halfbellstateAlso you can't have a XLR mic and XLR line feed at same time, but I use this to attenuate the feed and get a good mix:

Great stuff! Would love seeing more field recorder drops of different tiers on massdrop. I would love something like the zoom h4 or equivalent models from tascam.

halfbellstateme too! I wouldn't mind a Sound Devices or maybe a Zoom f4 or f8 either.... but I know I'm only one of a few that would be interested in that. Even if they cut off a ton of cash for it, I wouldn't be able to afford them at the moment either.
