I hate to be an idiot, but why would someone purchase this? It is a microphone?

SkipPpPeople believe some professional recorder have great and powerful audio playback circuit. Audiophiles use Sony D50, D100, M10 and Tascam DR100 to drive headphones as a portable solution. They do sound pretty good: precise , very high dynamic range but usually not very analog.

ccc888Yes, it is a "microphone". Plus audio interface plus storage: This is one of the best recording devices for people who want a single device for recording purposes. Of course one can record with a notebook + a usb mike too. But obviously these portable recorders are much smaller and in total much cheaper than a comparable cobination of separate devices. Of course this product category starts with much cheaper devices that nevertheless sound very good. But this is a real high end thing with a rugged body.

SkipPpWe have a DR-44 and we record our band rehearsals for review. With the XLR inputs, we can get a mix from the board as well as an ambient recording. These little recorders do a fantastic job for the price.

SkipPpA quality portable recorder is a godsend if you're in a band, want to improve your audio in video production or record anything like interviews or speeches regularly. I have an older, lower end model that's served as a microphone to record my band's practices, the mic with which I record audio for my YouTube channel and has been useful on a few occasions recording interviews. It's arguably not perfect for any one of those tasks, but for the price and versatility it's one of the best purchases I ever made.

KometesWe've done the same; combine the ambient recording from a T-100 with a board mix. Actually got a great-sounding live record this way.
