Product Description
Winner of Japan’s prestigious Visual Grand Prix Gold Award and one of Audiostream’s “Greatest Bits,” the TEAC UD-501 DAC/amp “invites you into each musical performance, making it downright difficult to leave.” Its dual-monaural design features two BurrBrown PCM1795 32-bit DACs, two MUSES8920 opamps, and two toroidal-core power transformers per channel—which together make for a clear, pure, three-dimensional sound. Along with native DSD playback at either 2.8 MHz or 5.6 MHz (DXD) rates, the UD-501 supports ASIO2.1 and DoP playback and PCM audio up to 384 kHz/32-bit resolution Read More

PSA: Most updated drivers @ https://teac.jp/int/product/ud-501/download . Japanese/International site has the most up to date drivers including important fixes and Windows 10 compatibility. American site's drivers are behind in both categories.

In addition to the previous PSA: me and a couple friends have confirmed the UD-501 (and possibly other TEAC UD-XXX DACs do not function properly unless you use a short USB cable. 3 feet seems to be a good length. Longer distances than 3 feet seem to create intermittent issues with a computer recognizing the device. Try to ensure the stress relief on the cable is of good quality as well.
Such a great DAC at such a great price on MD, these easy fixes from the driver to the shorter cord should keep great.

Thanks man... already did both upgrades 2 hours ago. I’m using the Teac player a lot. My version was from 2016 from the North American website . It’s nice to upgrade to a new version.

Interesting... but from what I read on the teac website... there isn't much difference between this model and the UD-301.... Same BurrBrown PCM 1795 for example. I already own the UD-301, I wonder if this would be a good upgrade....

Tidal Master (hi-res?) does not match local hi-res files in terms of sound... with my system anyway. I unsubscribed from Tidal, and even Spotify now cause I cannot stand the 'streaming' sound.
I had dropped tidal before MQA, you've just reaffirmed my concerns over highly packed high-res streams. If anyone else out there is a MQA skeptic this article won't help... https://www.linn.co.uk/blog/mqa-is-bad-for-music
Granted Linn has a horse in this race with not wanting to pay licensing fees but they bring up decent talking points.

DAC arrived earlier today, been running it through its paces.
First off, this is *not* an amp of any worth and I don't understand why they label it as one. This is a DAC with a monitor port. It sounds purty and extremely clear via phones, but is worthless at driving planar cans (HE4xx & T50RPmk3). Turned the dial to 0 and my brains didn't attempt to melt, sadly. The monitor out on my Behringer XR18 destroys it, power wise. This was expected, and absolutely not why I ordered it. The single purpose in life for this unit is to provide fully balanced output to the aforementioned XR18 mixer, which will route the audio where it belongs.
The audio coming out of the XLR on this unit is nice and clean with no background noise (that my ears register, or show on VU). I've not tested the RCA (I'm too lazy to move the Dot 1+). The levels are FIXED, which is great for driving high end gear, but will require a preamp if you want volume control.
I've not had a chance to test how well it handles the SPDIF and TOSLINK interfaces, but I'm going to assume they'll work just fine. I will have to route some glastic from one of my workstations and find out.
The only real WTF moment I had with it was not understanding that it defaults to output on RCA, not XLR. Input selection is all done via jog, no menu required. Output selection is done via menu.
Would I suggest one of these at this point? If you need a DAC? For bloody sure. This will happily feed any audio device delicious sound.

Is anyone else experiencing issues with Windows volume control with this DAC? I can't change the output volume. Is my only answer a passive preamp between this and my Liquid Carbon?
This will also occur if you are in bit-perfect modes on the various different players out there, regardless of the DAC downstream

Doesn't the liquid carbon have a volume knob?

Would there be any interest in a drop for the companion HA-501-B headphone amp?

How is the amp specifically on this? Debating if I should be pairing a better amp than an O2, which is what I have right now...

The amp on this is probably comparable to the O2. Less power maybe but also less distortion.

95% of the time I see people complain about customs duties, VAT, etc since international shipment is marked as purchase salle instead of gift like eBayers tend to do. It's the unfortunate part of dealing internationally.

Could I use the XLR and the RCA output at the same time if I have 2 amps. Say use the RCA to the Bottlehead Crack and the XLR balances to the Massdrop Liquid Carbon ?

The UD-501 & the UD-503 cannot output XLR (balanced) & RCA (unbalanced) simultaneously. The analog line output is chosen/selected via the menu; one or the other. The user can pair headphone output & one line output together on the UD-501, though. Users are suggesting the UD-301 can output XLR & RCA simultaneously, but the manual does not confirm or deny this, stating only "Connect [line out] using a [cable] set of only one type".

I have the UD-301. The 301 will output both simultaneously. However, you can always just split the line out on the 501 and do as any things with it as you want.
The 501 was not designed or intended to be a "do-all" desktop DAC. It was not designed to be a pre-amp, a headphone amp, or do anything other than be a top-shelf DAC. Very serious piece of audio gear..
