Folks there are too many stellar offerings out there that come well under 750. Please take a look, if money is a factor.
Look at a known quantity, something that there is a lot press on, and a lot discussion on the audio boards, like Schiit for example. No, I do not work for them, believe me, Teac is well below their radar for competition.
They are made in the USA, their service, trial period, response shipping blah blah is all amazing. Look at the Bitfrost for a DAC $400, and a Vali2 for a nice warm tube amp $150 total $650. Or the more sophisticated Asgard 2 for the amp at $250 for a total of the $750 MD is asking. It is just one example. Yes people can find lots of negative comments out there on Schiit products, but at least there is a lot of commentary, and that can be taken against all the other positive commentary.
MD - you are off the mark on this offering. It is too much money you are asking of people for an unknown product from a company with a dubious past, or to be nice from an unknown company.
Its wrong! I feel I can say that because between my daughter and I have spent over a grand on your audio products alone. I am a fan of MD, but this ......

coolerkingUnknown product.. are you serious? How is it unknown? Just because it's unknown to you doesn't mean it to anyone else. TEAC has been around for decades..
Schiit gear has become very popular, doesn't make it better for the money than TEAC equipment.. have you even tried using this DAC? I own the 501 and can attest to it's amazing build quality and impressive performance for the money.
I would try out the TEAC equipment before simply writing them off based on price alone.

coolerkingTEAC is a reputable Japanese electronics company that’s been around a long time in pro audio, also under their TASCAM brand.

coolerkingI would very much like a DAC, really just about anything, from the even higher end of TEAC; Esoteric,,, TEAC not a known, reputable name? Lol...

coolerkingI have a Schiit stack of my own (Modi multibit and Vali 2) which I think is a better value soundwise, but the look is plain and there is no power button in front. This item looks nice, seems well built, and is geared towards folks who simply want nice looks to go with nice sound. Nothing wrong with Teac so far as I am aware. Shop around but this thing seems fine, though it seems very expensive.

BrigarI still haven't found a better graphic equalizer than my TEAC from the 1980s! Meanwhile, my Denon (everybody's darling these days) receiver bit the dust within two years! Of course, just out of warranty. To me, the stuff that still works 40 years later beats the crap out of all the whizbang shit we get from China today that won't be working tomorrow.

coolerkingYou're not wrong that there's a lot in this range. I'm personally looking for a balanced output DAC and that's not easy to find in this price range (even the Schiit Jotunheim clocks at 500/600 and that's just running the Modi-equivalent DAC, with the Gungnir at 850/1250). BTW I'm still leaning towards the Jotunheim multibit because I want to explore multibit, would love recommendations otherwise.
FWIW I picked up a Panda Stack on eBay for 200 which I think is GREAT value. That being said, looks like no one is going to buy this before the drop ends, so I don't know if "MD" is to blame on this. I'm guessing to work with partners they sometimes have to price / offer what they're asking for and then using sales data to convince them how to price in the future. e.g. Focal Elex dropping $100 before the first drop finished.

djfluffkinsHonestly at this price you can have the CMA400i from questyle. Don't bother with multibit, its performance is underwhelming.

djfluffkinsAs an owner of several Delta-sigma DACs and a Modi Multibit, I recommend the latter if you're going to get it as the Jotunheim DAC module. Without getting poetic or esoteric, the Modi Multibit's sound is more real to my ears. I listen to lots of acoustic music, and the difference is not on the quality of the sound, but on the realism. To me, it just sounds right(er), not better. Good thing I already own it, so I can order the Lyr 3 without any module inside.

raansire7Definitely really itching to pull the trigger. I'm getting the THX-AAAs from the drop that should ship in October... So the Jotunheim should tide me over... Unless I find a used Gungnir multibit in the meantime. But still considering all options. Hopefully I'll get to listen to a multibit before I buy.

coolerkingAre you talking about the same Schiit that audiosciencereview found improper, or in fact, non-existent grounding on the Jotunheim model? I'll admit, great marketing though!
In the past few years, it seems as if Teac is under new management, going back to their high quality tudio equipment days, both with these mini components, as well as the lauded coaxial series they are producing. Perhaps a little too late though, as I agree with you on their questionable past in general hifi, at least in the USA.
There's nothing warm about tubes until they distort, and that's due to the even order harmonic nature of their distortion. Otherwise, tubes don't provide any magic audio signals unless you crank them in a guitar amplifier. So, please don't get hung up on the "tube warmth" nonsense being spread in audiophoolia.
If you're gonna go cheap, at least go ifi....even if their designs are awkward.

coolerkingWhat is the true reason behind all this spite, I wonder. Might it be... cognitive dissonance? Dear reader, the above opinion is uninformed at best. Make up your own mind on TEAC and their excellent line of products instead of listening to individuals exercising their sense of entitlement. I think it's wonderful that Massdrop has brought this product to its audience's attention.
