It is for picking things up. As a bowhunter, this thing is perfect for when I drop a glove or my release (or anything from my hunting pack for that matter) and need to retrieve it without the need to climb down (that sounds lazy, but it's not so easy in a climber stand - and even if in a ladder stand it's a lot of movement during the time you're supposed to be still)
