I have a one cup Moccamaster and love it. It has only the power switch on the side. What is the second switch on the side of this (next to the power switch)? Is there another switch for hot plate or is that automatically activated when you turn the unit on to start the coffeemaking process?

GiantCalGunnerThe second switch sets low or hi temp for the hotplate. Both the boiler and hotplate come on when you turn the machine on, the boiler element turns off as soon as it senses the water has all been brewed, and the hot plate stays on until you shut off the machine or enough time passes and it shuts off automatically.
