70d seems excessive for an emergency use item. 30d siliconised nylon or similar would surely be adequate and 50% lighter. Still, a legit product.

Why not check the U.K. inventory and find out what material is being used. There has to be a way to purchase a lighter version if it exists. One thought about the weight. The 70d material may provide more protection from winds and weather than 30d does. It seems like you place your back against the bothy to hold it up, and your back is going to get quite cold in cooler or winter conditions. Particularly if you are waiting out a storm or high winds. The thermal transfer may make enough of a difference. I'm not an engineer who can calculate the differences between materials.

Happily-MeI really don't think there would be any noticeable difference in thermal conductivity between the two fabrics. Also the price of 30d compared with 70d would amount to only a handful of dollars per bag. So I'm somewhat perplexed as to why the 70d version exists at all. It would be less slippery so perhaps slightly easier to use, but that's about the only advantage I can think of.

These look cool! I've never seen anything like this. I can see where this would come in really handy.

Does either one of these actually have a window as shown on the description page? I thought only the regular bothy bags did.

JbarNeither of the Superlite Bothy bags have windows, you are correct. However, the stuff sacks act as a ventilation source. Here is a review of the Superlite Bothy 2 you might find helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmbJFJ4tucw

What is the purpose of the tube on the top? Is it a vent of some sort or just a waste of fabric?

RMC0109It's a urinal for the members of your party that aren't allowed inside the bag during a storm.

RMC0109It's a sleeve in which you can place a paddle/hiking pole/stick in order to prop up the roof.

Our search and rescue team uses these. They are an essential piece of gear. Great for doing medical/rehab in the weather while awaiting transport.

These are group shelters NOT bothy bags, a bothy bag is a bag you sleep in, it's a very specific thing.

JerkyKenI know it does, I wasn't objecting to what the mass drop called it, just the name in general since it's A different from what the other manufacturers of similar products call it B different from what it's called by people that use these shelters and C a misappropriation and misuse of a word from my own tongue(I'm as unionist as a Scot gets, that doesn't mean it's OK for Englishmen to misuse our words).
