Pewter is well suited for everyday use and will retain its wonderful finish with minimum care. Wash your flask by hand in hot, soapy water. Never wash it in a dishwasher, as the chemical in the detergent will react with the pewter and ruin the finish. Hand dry using a straight up-and-down motion, rather than circles, and note that using a hard cloth may cause scratches on the soft metal. Hip flasks aren’t suitable for carbonated mixtures, and alcohol shouldn’t be left inside for more than 24 hours. If your flask becomes heavily marked, use a metal polish prior to washing. When dealing with antique pewter items that have become very dark, experts strongly recommend against repolishing, as this may reduce the value.
