I'm in the market for a pair of headphones so I'm eyeing these or the ATH-MSR7 from Audio Technica.
I live in an apartment right next to a major highway so noise is constantly a problem. I also wish to bring the headphones to and from uni, mainly for listening to classical/Hans Zimmer/ movie soundtracks/Two Steps From Hell type of music and occasional games along the way, from FPS, Strategy to DOTA.
I also listen in very long sessions, up to 15 hours a day.
I'm using just stock earbuds from HTC M8 on my desktop and phone.
Which ones should I get? My Budget is around $300 for the headphones. I might go for a DAC/amp later too, bringing the total to about $500.
Thanks in advance!
Be aware that these are on-ears, they may not be the most comfortable headphones if plan on using them for 15 hours/day. It depends on your ear shape. On-ears tend to push my ears against the arms of my glasses, which I can't stand.
I do own the MSR7's and am really happy with them. I'll admit they are not the most comfortable headphones straight out of the box... there was a pressure point on the top of my head, and my ear tips touched the drivers. But both those issues went away after a month of break-in and changing the ear pads (I use Brainwavz HM5 replacement pads).
Definitely go with the msr7 if these are the only two you are considering but be aware most people consider the msr7's bright if that would bother you and also not the best for isolation, still I think they are a really great closed back headphone
I'd suggest MSR7NC if you're in a noisy environment. Exact same sound as msr7 just with anc, which makes a big difference for low frequency isolation. I use my pair out of my HTC10 at uni and in the city and love them, super easy to power and sound great off phone. I'd call them flat and analytical but not bright. I have HD6XX and X2s at home for reference powered with an O2, and the msr7s can compete with both of them
I would love to get the HD650 but since they are open back, it's almost a no-go. Still, I'm open to suggestions :)
Many don't like the ANC so I was on the fence, plus these cost twice as much as the regular MSR7 headphones so they'll probably blow my budget. Still, it's so tempting, but I'll probably will have to do without a DAC purchase.
Really appreciate your opinion though. Keep them coming!
Since you like HD-650 (these are my favorites) you may want to try HD-25. Terrific (as with in-ear monitors!!) sound isolation, velour earpads make them listenable for hours even for the eyeglasses-wearer like me. ATH-ESW9 sound sweeter, but they are too flimsy and give no sound isolation.
I agree I own the hd650's and msr7 ALONG with quite a few others lol but the msr7 is an extremely capable and good sounding headphone and I don't consider them bright, I prefer bright headphones though, I was just saying I've heard from allot of people they consider them bright but I also wouldn't call them flat close to neutral yes
That's a hard one not to sure I've owned any closed backs yet that made me think of 650's sound, audio technica a900x sounds pretty great but I don't suggest anybody ever go outside in them
Do you really enjoy x2's while owning those other two headphones I only ask because I bought a pair of amazon and I returned them because I was hearing allot of distortion down low and even aside from that I wasn't to impressed, but you seem to like a similar sound that I do if you like the 650 and msr7 so some insight on your experience with the x2 would be interesting, thanks
Beyerdynamic dt 250 excellent isolation and balanced sound. Almost forgot about them I've owned and demoed way to many headphones lol
The HD25 looks interesting... I'll look them up.
You speak from experience, which is fantastic!
I'll give the DT 250 a look.
No problem it doesn't get enough recognition for how good it is and I think it's much closer to hd650 sound then the msr7 but doesn't look nearly as pretty
Yeah I've never had any issues with my X2s, they're a lot of fun with all that soundstage. I use them for games and movies, but for long term music listening 650s do feel a step above
I didn't think they could all sound like that to many great reviews, but I ended up with some hifimans the 400i's and there my soundstage imaging kings right now but there still not as good as the hd700's I use to have, I know you would think the opposite but I really loved there sound definitely looking for a good deal on another pair or even a trade if anyone has a set and is interested
That's interesting, I've never actually heard hd700, the internet has me kinda scared of them haha
Lol yea give them a try if you ever get a chance it seems the majority of the internet doesn't like them, but personally I haven't found a can I like more and I always think about them I'm going to rent the hd800 for a few weeks but I have a feeling I'm not going to like them as much as the 700 they just did everything perfect sub bass mids highs air soundstage insane imaging I really don't think they can be beat for the money
If you haven't bought something yet I just got the momentum over ear the first version and they sound very much like the 650 not as good obviously but same sound I got them off eBay for 49 dollars and they are in mint condition the guy had a few more left if you want me to send the link let me know there all used but not suppose to have more than minor marks and the one I got is in new condition and sounds great
Nice! I haven't bought anything yet... if shipping is OK, I may get one!
How would you like to proceed?
If your in the United States it was free shipping and only took 3 days I'm going to try to link it to you but if I fail I'll give you the sellers name then just go on eBay and look for it I'm gonna try to see what I can do now
I think they might have sold them all my apologies they had multiple of them in different colors the sellers name is renewlogic if you can find him on there he's got allot of headphones cheaper than going prices
Yeah, oh well. Thanks for your suggestion :D
get the monolith 1060's . you wont regret it.
To me, "flat and analytical" means fatiguing. I wouldn't want to sit with flat and analytical for 15 hours!
