Two of my keys have a piece of hard plastic covering the key ring hole. Will the key smart accommodate this type of keys or would I need some kind of expansion kit?

No the key smart need some kind of hole to go through (It uses a screw and nut technique to hold it in place) But this can be easily solved by heating up a nail and poking a hole through the hard plastic on your key ring.
