My unit arrived on Saturday and I've been listening as much as possible since then. I own a few similar devices that I can compare it to which I feel compelled to do based on its performance. At work I use a Topping A30 amp with my Mod House Argon MK3's and I've tried a few different entry level DAC's and USB to SPDIF adapters with this setup. One of these is a Starting Point Systems DAC 3 which is a warm natural sounding NOS DAC but is just a little too lacking in detail. So most of the time I've been using an SMSL SD-793II powered by an iFi iPower and fed a SPDIF signal by a first generation M2TECH HiFace. This was a convoluted setup with a poor price to performance ratio but it did sound fairly good to my ears. Putting the D10 in place of the HiFace made a definite improvement in overall clarity. Sounds, especially high pitched ones, seemed sharper and less smeared. When I then replaced the SMSL DAC with the DAC output of the D10 I received even better sound. It is only slight but things just sound a little more natural and engaging making for a more enjoyable listening experience. The real surprise was when I compared the SPDIF output of the D10 to that of my Schiit Eitr going into my Schiit Modi 2U. The surprise was that I couldn't really hear a difference. I experimented with these DAC's and USB to SPDIF adapters because I was unhappy with the performance of USB interfaces like the one in the Modi 2U. The Schiit Eitr was the best sounding and best reviewed solution I have found so far. The Topping D10 makes me feel like I should have tried an XMOS interface and Sabre DAC sooner but on the other hand there was never a cheaper opportunity to try it until I found it here for a mere $75. Long story short I would definitely recommend this DAC.
Listened more with the Magni 2U powering my HE400i's. First switching between the Schiit Eitr connected via coaxial to the Schiit Modi 2U and the D10 connected via optical. Both using wasapi. Then switching between the Modi 2U via optical from the D10 and the analog outputs of the D10 directly. This required attenuation of the D10 ouputs as they were louder. In all cases I could hear no differences in sound between the two. It's a shame because I paid $75 for the Topping and over $320 for the stack of Schiit.
