This seems to be a nice sub $200 combo even at the higher price point. The head-fi comments on both the amp and DAC seem generally positive. I mostly was using a portable setup where I have a single unit that's both an amp and DAC. But I'm thinking of getting a nice 'indoor' setup for my stereo. I see mention of a line out, so I assume that this setup could do double duty as both a headphone amp and a DAC/preamp setup for my digital source for my stereo?
Unfortunately no. The line out is fixed. You cannot use it as a preamp. I am thinking of returning mine. This is a big deal for me. It was not mentioned in the product description.
I didn't mean as a preamp as the first person who answered my question thought. I meant as a digital to analog converter that I could then plug into a line in / aux input on my stereo. Hence my DAC/preamp term.
I disagree. The fixed line outputs are very uncommon for a desktop preamp as many users have also powered speakers connected to the computer. I later discovered that Topping offers an integrated amp in this product line, so that explains the fixed line outputs. They should have included a switch to select fixed/variable line outputs. The cost of this would be minimal.
