Ok this is a realily stupid question but I can’t seem to get a straight answer. So I have a pair of R-15M speakers hooked to a Sony STRDH 190. I don’t really listen with headphones often. Really all I have done with my fairly new setup is stream Spotify from my iPad Pro. However, I have a lot of audio files on a PC that I can’t seem to get to play. Would this DAC help me? In other words, I want a means to connect my PC to my receiver but want to bypass the DAC in the PC. I appreciate any and all insights into this Cadillac problem I am having. Al in Oakland

RazumikinIt depends on what your problem is. does your audio software not recognize the audio format you are using? what format are you trying to play and what software do you use?

CuNiCoThanks for the update. My legally acquired jazz collection is in MP3 and FLAC. I'm not sure if I will hook up a LP or not. My objective is to be able to utilize my new Klipsch speakers while using music stored in the PC but doing so not using Bluetooth

Razumikinthis sounds like you are having trouble with your computer even playing the files? For media players to play FLAC, they need the codec to understand it. there some that come with it, the most popular being Foobar(this is what i use). You dont "need" a DAC as your computer should do it already with the sound card or motherboard, it just might not be very good. you can just use an 3.5mm audio (headphone) jack to RCA connection and go PC > AMP > speakers. If you want a "cleaner" sound, you could get a DAC, (this is a very nice one for the price) and use your PC's USB or optical out > DAC > AMP > speakers

CuNiCoYes I think the dac installed on my mid range Dell is below par. I just did a test where I streamed Spotify from my PC and then from an iPad mini 3 to my Harmon Kardon Onyx Studio 4 and the difference was very significant. So through this Dac that issue will be gone? What will happen when I stream from an iPad or iPhone? Which dac will be used? Thanks so much for your help!

Razumikin" What will happen when I stream from an iPad or iPhone? Which dac will be used? " it depends on how you wire it up. if you're satisfied with the quality of your ipad/phone then there is no need to change that. you can just hook a DAC up in between your PC and amp and switch inputs to it when you want to listen to that music. if you wanted to, you could hook up your apple products to the DAC with some type of dongle to usb, but im not familiar with apple products so i'm not 100% sure how. i have my phone just output to my amp or powered speakers depending on which room i'm in. i included a ms paint drawing of my setup and connections used.

RazumikinYou should also try and get software to play your FLAC files and try the same thing. sometimes those streaming services are weird on PC and fine on phones.

CuNiCoWow! You are totally awesome for going above and beyond to help me understand this simple, yet somehow baffling, situation. I'm by no means an audiophile but am beginning to get back into it. I had a brief little swing with B&O in my mid 20's and for unknown reasons or no reason at all the trajectory of my life changed rather dramatically, which included the loss of and consequential disinteret with the brand and its whole aesthetic. So yeah, I have been building up a little system but instead of just throwing money at equipment I neither need nor understand, I have been trying my best to do this slowly and deliberately. Everything you've shared with me here has been really informative and interesting; so much so that I will probably pull the trigger on this one. One of the disadvantages of my receiver is the RCA jacks are in the back, which makes hooking an iPhone or DMP up to it not that easy, especially if you have a bad neck.

Razumikin" One of the disadvantages of my receiver is the RCA jacks are in the back " mine is like that too, i just use a 3ft RCA to headphone jack and run it under my amp out the front. I just leave it plugged in all the time so i dont have to mess around in back. the jack sticks out enough i can grab it, but i can also slide it under the amp out to be of the way.
you're welcome for the help, i got turned off from the audiophile / vinyl communities in my 20's because it was full of d-bags and elitists. i guess it's always been that way. The mentality that you need to spend thousands of dollars to have a worthwhile setup is just so off putting. keep on trucking, and dont let the pricks keep from listening to good music.
