How does this compare to an O2 ODAC & the Schiit stack

On par with the Schiit Modi 2 base edition, but not quite as refined. The Modi 2 Uber, or especially the Multibit, those would be a definite upgrade, and they cost more. This D30 is much more "fun/colored" than the O2, which is a bit analytical and cold, it lacks a little in the low end for my taste. Modi 2, and the 2 Uber will be a bit brighter, but more open and bigger sound stage depending on your headphones. The Modi 2 Multibit, is the most refined out of them all, but is a bit more warm than the 2 Uber, and the standard Modi 2. Hope that helps.

What do you mean by refined? I can't imagine how "warm" and "refined" could be used to describe sound coming from the same device.

Warm just means non forward.. Refined in my case is talking about how microdetail is presented in the soundstage. Not sure what you think warm means.

You're fine using the optical if you can't get the USB to work. You may just want to give Schiit a call and see what they recommend about getting the USB working though. Good luck. Found this quote on Head-fi, seems like solid advice. "If asynchronous and galvanically isolated, go USB. If asynchronous and handles high bit word length go USB If USB has line noise in it, go optical. If usb has no line noise but is isochronous go optical. "
