This DAC is specifically designed for use with SACD files using the rare Direct-Stream Digital Codec. This is using an older 2003-vintage Cirrus Logic chip (that I am sure is quite adequate despite it's age) that was released at a time when DSD/SACD was thought to have a competitive chance against the mainstay PCM that we all use now. The Cirrus chip spec page indicates that this will work with PCM files, but there is no reason to buy this unless you have some DSD files or want to experiment with DSD (which may be worth the effort .. I may buy this DAC for that purpose). Otherwise it makes more sense to buy the Topping D20 which is designed for use with the PCM files that we all own.

ProfessorEpsilonBut are you 100% sure that the D20 sounds better with PCM files than the D30 would?

WamckyThe D20 have a lower spec chip, so no, it will not be better, in fact worse.
WamckyWhere did I say that the D20 would sound better than the D30? I said that the D30 is specifically designed for use with SACD files. How it might work with PCM files is unknown and largely irrelevant.

ProfessorEpsilonHuh? It's not irrelevant to someone only using PCM files. I guess you did not say the D20 would sound better, but you did say
, " Otherwise it makes more sense to buy the Topping D20 which is designed for use with the PCM files that we all own"
I assumed you made this recommendation knowing the D20 sounded better for PCM. Else, the recommendation doesn't really carry much weight? Unless your recommendation is based on saving a few extra few dollars and youi don't care which sounds better? I understand that the D30's main feature is DSD, but what if it's great with PCM also?
