Dekoni Balanced 4-Pin XLR Cable for Sennheiser HD 8XX
old laptop setup: No Dac, amazon rca to audio jack- thx 789 amp, Focal Elex
-good mids, detailed sharp high, muddy bass, lacked soundstage/natural instrument sounds and clinical for me.
New laptop setup: Topping D70(1st DAC), XLR cables, THX 789 amp, Focal Elex
-holy shit batman, my jaws dropped.
Not clinical with very natural clean sound in bass (mud is gone for now), excellent mids for the instruments, less sharp highs, detailed slightly opened up sound stage. I had my old setup for 1 year and this DAC improved the music I listen to by 30%-35%. Everything is a lot more natural tone sounding and very alive especially with the silky smooth mids. This digital machine is too fast for my brain to process what I'm hearing. Again it feels like I'm listening to music for the first time. Worth every penny and probably my end game dac for my audiophile journey for a while.
Next combo review setup: Topping D70, XLR cables, Monoprice Liquid Platinum, Focal Elex.
-Ill keep you posted until then =)
It seems that Topping tries to consistently outdo themselves when it comes to state of the art dacs and amps, and the d70 is no exception. The remote makes it so user friendly and you can change inputs and outputs in an instant. I connected it to my MacBook Air and played Qobuz hifi tracks. My god. Incredible resolution and detail. Paired with my THX 789 and my Focal Elex the experience is incredible. One of the best dacs on the market.
Or if you want great sound but don’t need all the functionality you can just buy one of Toppings cheaper dacs.
I got the D70 specifically for the THX. The D70 is one of the most linear, flat, natural sounding DACs out there, and it should pair perfectly with the THX which has very similar metrics. It's an even closer match than other more expensive DACs. They are practically made for each other.
90 day update:
Now, that the D90 exists, it's difficult to praise the D70 as being the best of the best, anymore. The D90 also offers Bluetooth, and there's a MQA version coming. Also, the D70's AK4497 is a little slower, and so has a gentler bass presentation. Actually, it affects more than just the bass. The D90 should offer more slam, and impact in all frequencies. So, if you have the money, you'll probably want to be buying something with the newer AK4499 chip, like the Gustard A-22, with its alluring fully custom Class-A discrete logic and power circuits in lieu of ICs. The D70 is still a great option, though. So, if you're looking to save a little money, you won't be disappointed.
I chose the D70 over the more expensive ESS chipped DACs, because of it's flatter, more linear response curve. I figured it will pair better with the 789, and allow me to get a nice flat, uncolored, linear and transparent reference point. They are also about evenly priced, and so they are quite the pair. I feel like I got exactly what I was hoping for. It sounds almost perfect. However, I can feel that gentler impact, which does leave me wishing for more.
I also like the large display, and it has 3 brightness levels. Despite what a certain website claimed in their testing, it's plenty bright, even on the lowest setting.
The only missing features are MQA decoding, Wi-Fi streaming, and Bluetooth. However, you can easily add the Wi-Fi & Bluetooth capability with a cheap singleboard computer, such as a Raspberry Pi, and for a fraction of the price of the more expensive models. MQA decoding can be handled by software, and it's a digital technology (occurs prior to audio processing), so you won't notice any difference. Thus, it's not missing a single thing you really need.
The PCM filters come in very handy when tube-rolling, as it makes it possible to match/correct the characteristics of your tubes. I was actually hating a new pair of tubes I spent a lot of money on, until I figured out that all they needed was a little extra delay and roll off to soften them up a bit, and so they sounded much better.
Also, mine arrived with 220v selected, so I had to manually switch mine to work with US power standards. It's as easy as flipping a switch, but just thought I'd leave you this little reminder.
This was a big upgrade for me. I upgraded from a Schiit Modi 2 and currently have this DAC paired with a Magni 3 (the THX AAA 789 is on the way). I wasn't expecting the DAC to make such a huge difference, but I noticed less distortion in the bass and the bass extension improving significantly since doing this upgrade. The soundstage on my Focal Elears and Sennheiser HD 6XX seems to have widened significantly as well. I did a blind A/B test between the D70 and the Modi 2, and I could tell which DAC was being used immediately. To be fair, I haven't tried many DACs between the Modi 2 and the D70 in price, so I do not have the full context. But making this jump has had more of an impact that I anticipated.
briantotheyanyanNo offense to you or Schiit, but you would notice a difference between a "gaming" sound card and the Modi 2. The Modi 2 is an abomination. I could literally hear distortion in music that I didn't hear before when I had that DAC. Needless to say, it was the first thing I sold when I decided to upgrade my gear. I'm glad you chose a quality brand like Topping. They make very good equipment for the money.
I echo what others have shared. Hooked up to my MacBook with USB and connected to the THX 789 -> Focal Elex. The sound from this chain is breathtaking!
I wanted to share a tip to any who use Tidal on a MacBook. Make sure you turn off "Loudness normalization" (found in Settings > Streaming tab). I thought the D70 was broken when playing 96kHz songs. It's actually Tidal & the Mac limiting the volume output.
That's a great question. I have mine in DAC only mode bc I've heard (and assume) the quality is better. I have not tested it though, but I've thought about it lately since the 789s biggest negative is that the volume isn't well marked. Using the Topping would give access to the remote and consistent levels to limit high dBs.
If anyone has done some testing between the 2 modes, It would be great if you could post a quick opinion/results.
ThanatosidI have tried it both ways. I personally don't really notice any difference in how it sounds either way. It's just more convenient for me to use the remote with the D70 because my "stack" is out of reach when I'm lounging in my recliner while listening to my music. I've thought of getting a tube amp. How do you have yours integrated into your setup?
I got this to replace SU-8 from S.M.S.L, not a huge difference as one can predict but the differences of a ESS and AK chips was hearable, there is a bit more air around the notes and the sound doesn´t sound as "forced" compared to ESS.
How about realizing they aren't shitty products and there are tiers of things. It's pretty well accepted that the 6xx and 789 are some of the best in their class/price range...yup I was right a sad attempt at being elitist...
I'm sure your personal opinion trumps all though because you have golden ears it seems like. Good for you mate enjoy lol
Jumping back and forth between this and my JDS Labs Element, the D70 sounds ever so slightly warmer - it takes a touch of the harshness out of the treble listening to my Hifiman Arya. Channel separation seems better defined and improves the stage marginally because of this. Of course, placebo is a powerful thing. Could I tell the difference in a controlled blind A/B test? Could anyone? That is the million dollar audiophile argument when it comes to DACs in this range and beyond. Regardless, I'm confident it's unlikely to be a DAC that disappoints any prospective purchaser. Enjoy.
Dac works wonderful. Sounds immaculate. Took me a while to figure out that the red switch was flippable. It sounds amazing. I cannot exaggerate even saying this. But it's a pleasure to the ears and with the la Figaro 339 it sounds wonderful. I am awaiting to try the THX 789 to fully experience the capabilities of balanced audio. I would say this is the nicest dac I've had the pleasure of listening to. Great for the money. Remote is nice and just overall great wow factor in a package. Please do yourself a favor and own it.
Fantastic, it's actually great breaking things down and seeing what you're truly after. All after having a splendid experience with the topping, exploring the balanced audio world, seeing the difference ( or shall I say hearing). I can see your optimistic view must be blocked by a skyscraper built from your own rudimentary fundamentals. Your account shows your comments, which suggests what you're doing here is regular in tactic. Which is achieving a specific end, for the English you lack. So looking at my comments one can see publicly that I'm consistent with positive features. The research being that looking at that, which doesn't really take research but to you it does apply. Then your motif being the pattern of which you commit verbal interaction almost in decorative fashion when speaking to others. There is no right or wrong in this situation, you've escalated it to the point that you have to be right in self assessment. I just wrote a review and here we are. But you surely must be trying to solve something out of this or there'd be no continuation. So your defense is that someone would go out of their way to come back to a review months later to make accounts to call you out? For no particular reason whatsoever than to just dig into your time? That's the answer you just gave. No explanation behind, so just a mingling of vocabulary. The difference being my words make sense, you just keep running in circles with words having no backing in meaning. You also have a hard time spelling correctly in the fit of your rage. So if one were to take this all at "face value" it would appear you are lacking traction you seek. You have no points. You just spun up this idea starting with your false accusation in this thread; what a skit its become. Also, notice how no one has been talking but me and you? Must be the loon in ya
Thru usb & coax sounds great. Thru I2S DSD great, PCM heavily distorted. Defective unit, firmware fix or operator error? 10/13/19. After power outage d70 works perfectly. I guess sometimes all it takes is a hard reboot.
