Pros: Sounds great, can play even very high resolution audio natively. Can't argue with what you get for the price! Slight cons: maybe not the easiest to setup and get working, no battery included for the remote. To set it up:
  • Use USB (if you want to be able to play the highest resolution files at their native rate), install the Topping drivers
  • Plug in it a headset (TRRS) at least once (before I did plug a TRRS in it for the first time, my headphones would only receive sound on the left ear for some reason, TRRS headset was on both sides, plugged back TRS headphones and now no problem).
  • Use ASIO or WASPI output plugins on your favorite player to have it send to the DX3Pro at higher sample rates
  • Download the plugins and instructions from the Topping web site to be able to play DSD files using foobar2k (follow the instructions exactly)
Tips:
  • does a little click when switching sample rates, that's normal.
  • you can operate it without the remote: 'double click' on the rotary dial to switch between the modes (headphones only, headphones + line out, DAC (line out only, no volume control), DAC with volume (line out only)

I love this little unit! I run mine several hours every day and have had no issues, and the sound is just FANTASTIC! Coming from the LCX + SDAC the sound quality is vastly improved (at least to my ears) and it has enough power on high gain to power my T50's to headache-inducing levels. The bluetooth pairing is very straightforward, and using Tidal and Spotify there's no clicking or fade-in issues. I only use this with headphones, so I can't speak to how it works as a preamp to speakers. However, I would strongly recommend this to anyone looking for an incredibly clear, very powerful, cheap all-in-one unit for your desk. edit: I've used this with HD6xx, Fidelio X2/HR, H6, T50RP, T60RP, DT990, DT1990, and EMU Teak; they all sound amazing. edit #2: I’m currently using this as a dac for my 789, it turns out I prefer the sound of this to the SU-8 by a small margin.

Topping seems to have a quality control problem apparent in many user experiences...most found in audiosciencereview.com. I'm glad I decided to open mine up shortly after delivery. The optical connector was not soldered at all. I corrected this and so far the unit is fine. Topping really needs to address these issues because it is harming their reputation and its really sad because they design very nice units for the money.

Listening to my DX3 Pro right now via my HD6XXs and I have no complaints. Clean, great sound. I'm not an extreme audiophile who is willing to shell out thousands for the last 2-5% increase in quality, but I will say that I know bad sound when I hear it and the DX3 Pro sounds pretty dang good.

Greg_SThe DX3 is a greattt match with HD5/6 series. On low gain it already drives it perfectly. Good choice you made

Once I muddled through the chinese and found a workable driver, the unit is performing flawlessly, great detail, yet not "analytical" in it's presentation, the headphone output powers my power hungry, high-impedance Beyerdynamic's easily.

I just got this dac/amp today and BOY am I satisfied! This sounds silly and laughable but for years I've been trying to find a dac/amp combo that gives the same sound "signature" and musicality as my original ZTE Zmax Z970. Yes, this sounds laughable because the Z970 is a $100 phone. I got the Grace SDAC thinking because it uses the same AKM chip family, it would sound very close--- so I hooked that up to an O2, and instant disappointment. Then I got the Zmax 3 (Z978), thinking.. hey! it's the same brand and a newer model phone, so it must sound the same or better, right? Nope. Close but no cigar-- the Z978 sounds congested and something about the treble is off, less sparkly. At least, that confirmed my suspicion whether the Z970's sound is by design or by accident--- it's an accident. Then finally I plugged in the DX3 Pro--- jackpot! That airy spaciousness. The sound signature is near identical -- the Z970 is just a tad bit more "guttural" in the low/mid bass, but the DX3 has more resolution and "sparkliness" on the high end (a fair tradeoff). But as a whole, the DX3 Pro is 95% of the Z970 "musical magic" that I've been looking for quite a while (you can't see this magic in audio graphs). Anyway, I'm not sure if this is a review for the DX3 or for the Zmax Z970. :) but there you have it. If you have the DX3, you'll also know what the Z970 sounds like. FYI, the comparison I've made is using Massdrop HD58x headphone because I needed to compare the "guttural" bass that the Z970 excels at, and this headphone is fantastic at it. Inputs are via USB from a LG V20 for both the SDAC and DX3 (this takes into account the USB controller, not just the DAC portion). I should point out with great irony that I almost never use the V20 for its sound because there's no magic at all-- while technically proficient, the V20 simply doesn't sound "good."

mosquitoguyI have to disagree with you about the sound of the V20 phone. I use it with all of my cans directly except my HD650s (where I have used an iFi xCan as a powerful amp via the headphone out) and it sounds great, either playing Tidal at CD quality or streaming my FLAC files from my music server, some of which are high-resolution. Stereophile magazine agrees with me, as do a number of MD members. Anyway, to each, his (or her) own. Just my two cents. Glad you like this unit. My V20 is my high res "iPod." Peace.

Roll the dice
Mine worked fine for about 6months sound was great, loved it, then it stopped working. I assumed this was due to the power brick and waited for a new one to arrive. It was not, the unit is now a paper weight. Decided to finally crack the hood and look inside today and was surprised to see basic things like the ribbon cable not (fully) seated, component legs not trimmed and quite sloppy soldering If you want to roll the dice and risk having an expensive paper weight, this may be the device for you. Personally I will not be buying Topping again as a result of this experience, which is a shame because I really like(d) the device. Purchased in January 2019 Drop. Here's a 2.5x magnification shot of the hand soldering, as you can see there's a whole lot of spatter (yes that is spatter in the middle, not a chunk of dirt)

Dang. I guess you better create your username BEFORE writing your review or it gets lost... Anyway, my first DAC/amp so keep that in mind, but I'm over the moon impressed. Running this into some 6xx 'phones from Drop, USB out of a Google Pixel 2 XL usually with Spotify extreme level quality, and could not be happier. Have not hooked it up to a computer where I'd maybe be able to see the F/W level in my unit, but have had zero issues at all. Thrilled with both of my recent Drop acquisitions.
