Can someone share a link to the user manual? I read something about being able to lock the line output to a fixed level. Just wondering if it is still possible to use the headphone amp after you've done this... Asking because I rather use the volume control on this unit for my headphones than for my powered monitors. I have a Schiit Magni2 Uber that I currently use as headphone amp, but I rather use it as a speaker amp with this unit, so I can use the headphone amp of the unit to drive my cans...

Sizwe_KemmelTo do that, just click the line out key on the remote, or double click the vol. knob until you see the kHz rating on the display. That will lock the volume out to what ever the level is of the source. If you see a blinking headphone icon on the bottom left, that means the line out is acting more like a pre out, if you see a solid headphone icon, then that means you are not producing a line out at all. To add to this, if you see the word DAC in the midd left with the volume level then you are in preout mode. Press the line out button again or double click the vol. knob once more to enter line out mode. This will be confirmed by the removal of the volume indication and the dB icon on the bottom right of the screen. Hope this helps ya bud.

OrcaBrigadeThanks for taking the time to reply. I appreciate that, but I don't think you fully understood my question, or something in your reply needs further explanation. If the line out is locked, will the volume knob still affect the headphone output? If it doesn't I can't use it for my intended purpose. I currently have an old DAC that I want to upgrade. It has a crappy headphone amp, a (variable) pre out and a (fixed) line out. If you use the headphone amp the pre-out is muted, but you can still use the line out. I have the line out connected to my Magni 3 which powers my headphones. In my current setup, my powered speakers are on the pre-out. I am looking for an affordable DAC that has the same functionality as my current DAC, but preferably with a decent headphone amp and a modern chipset. The "cheapest" alternative that has the exact same functionality as my current DAC is a Marantz HD-DAC1. But it isn't cheap at all at €650 and it lacks Bluetooth and is limited to 192 kHz. It also lacks DoP on the spdif inputs, so it's an outdated DAC and I refuse to pay so much for an old piece of gear. If you or anyone knows a reasonably priced alternative, even if it doesn't have a separate pre-out, but as long as I can use the headphone amp and the fixed line out simultaneously, please leave me a reply. (Bluetooth is not a necessity but DoP over spdif is.) Thanks

Sizwe_KemmelChrist... yer right I sure did miss a good part of that comment, terribly sorry bud! Ok so I don't know about the other features yer lookin' for. BUT I do know you can use the rca out as a line out and a pre out. To be more specific on this, you have four modes for audio outputs on this device. (I will elaborate shortly) You can line out from ANY of the inputs. At the same time you can also use headphones on the dx3 pro from ANY of the inputs. The output mode can be toggled between; (Edit: line out modes can be toggled by remote or by double clicking the volume knob quickly) ~dx3 volume controlled headphone out only, the rca out will do nothing. (indicated by a solid headphone icon on bottom left) I will call this "HP out." (maintains dx3 vol. control) ~dx3 volume controlled headphone AND pre out (rca) simultaneously pushes audio from both the rca jacks and the headphone jack. (indicated by a blinking headphone icon on bottom left) I will call this "hybrid out." (maintains dx3 vol. control) ~dx3 volume controlled pre out (rca) dedicates the full audio from the source to the rca out, this will turn OFF the headphone jack completely. (indicated by the "DAC" icon lighting up just above where the headphone icon would be) I will call this "Pre out." (maintains dx3 vol. control) ~dx3 DAC line out (not to be confused with pre out via the same rca jacks) upon toggling the line out mode as I have stated before, this will put the unit into a full dac mode. The headphone jack will also not work while in this mode. (indicated by the same "DAC" icon being lit up, but also with the volume level replaced by the kHz rating of the source) I will call this "DAC out." (loses dx3 vol. control) There is only ONE, SINGLE pair of rca outs on this unit, all other jacks are purely INPUTS. I am also not sure if the gain adjust will do anything in this state as I honestly just leave it on high gain for literally everything I own. That and the Loxjie P20 hybrid tube amp I am feeding from the rca outs of the dx3 is always kept at max volume or it makes the ability to alter the volume from the dx3 pointless, UNLESS I am going in to DAC out mode. Then obviously I will turn the P20 so I don't blow my ears or the cans. Also, I have not used the bluetooth feature on this unit, I... don't really need to, to be honest. So I will not talk about the quality on that, but I have read that it's rather stable and sounds clear as day. Does this answer your question better? If not, please reply with a far more narrowed question or what have you so I can try to understand what you are precisely trying to know and answer it, if I am able, to the best of my ability.

BalancedfreakI have the TEAC NT-505 on my wishlist, but it's way beyond my budget at the moment. The only affordable solution is the Aune X8, even though it lacks a headphone amp. At least you can use the variable and fixed output simultaneously. So I think I'll go with that one with a Muses02 op-amp, since it features op-amp rolling. Thanks for your reply, though. The only ifi product that I find interesting is their flagship DAC, but it's about €2750 over here, so that's not an option at all...
