Hello Folks. I do actually own this DAC/Amp and I also own the Schiit Joutenheim, so I can try and do a decently quick comparison. I have been using the Topping DX7 now as my primary DAC/Amp for a couple of weeks .
The Topping DX7 is a really good device for the price. It has a very solid build, and is heftier than it looks. It has a nice OLED screen, and the remote is much better than I was anticipating, and is one of the best items with this product if you are intending to use it for the center of your music listening setup.
The Topping is more than powerful enough to power even my most demanding headphones. The ZMF Eikon and Topping DX7 is a truly magical pairing, and this is just out of the single ended amplifier. I am REALLY looking forward to trying out the balanced connection when my cable finally gets here from Ursine Audio. The DAC is very musical, and has great transparency. Compared with the Joutenheim, I find myself gravitating to the Topping DX7 more often than the Joutenheim since the remote is great. Having the ability to power cycle the device, control volume and change inputs without having to leave my seat is fantastic, and the auto on/off feature is also a big plus. The Joutenheim has a single power toggle switch in the back of the unit that is kind of annoying to reach around and turn on/off, which becomes problematic with placement options since the back needs to be accessible.
The size is about perfect for my environment, and the unit (even under a heavy volume load) never gets hot or even warmer the ambient air around it. Vents are out the back and sides, so just keep those clear and you should be golden. The Joutenheim gets extremely hot, and I would be concerned having that placed on top of, or around another unit that would get that warm.
The one downfall of the Topping is the software. The drivers are a little spotty, and the DSD functionality is less than straightforward to get functioning properly with Fubar. With that said, the drivers will improve over time, so do not let that drive you away from looking at this little gem.
I picked up the Topping DX7 off of eBay for a little over $280. Based on the price, the fabulous remote, and the more than ample enough power, I can not recommend this unit enough. Just understand the drivers are less than perfect, but if you are not looking for anything above 24bit /192k hz, then this shouldn't be a big issue for you. Just read forums on head-fi and the users there have some nice walk throughs how to get the unit working as intended with it's spotty software.
Happy hunting! -Elzizo

ElzizoThanks for the review. I am looking to buy my first serious amp/dac combo and the Joutenheim is definitely under consideration. I will definrtely add the Topping to the list. Thanks again.

ElzizoI have it too and recently put just about everything else I own for sale on headfi because of it. I had an assortment of DACs but none of them are as good as this! I use it with a Topping A30 amp rolled with am LM4562 and a JDS Labs o2. the built in amp is fine and comparable to either one but I'm too used to my analog volume controls and having 2 amps plugged in at once let's me share my headphones with someone else or switch between my IEMs and Over-ear units on the fly. the amp pass through mode allows me to have 3 headphones connected but it's not so useful since the volume controls the line out level too in that case.

ElzizoDoes the volume knob control the volume for headphone and speakers?

FaceMcBashyI answered this in another thread. It can, if you have the DX7 set to Headphone and Analog Out (RCA or XLR) from the remote. If you have the DX7 set to just Analog Out, then you will need to control the volume from your powered speakers, tube amp etc since this is a true line out with a dB gain (pre-amp).

ElzizoHey would you happen to know if these drive planar headphones well? I'm looking to get some Fostex mods at some point and I hear those are difficult to drive

FrostyPWithout a problem this drives planar headphones. Drives my LCD-2, Fostex Tr50RP and Monolith headphones without any challenges.

ElzizoI have / had both as well (sold my Jot)... I mainly got this to be a balanced DAC to feed my iFi pro-iCan.
My quick thought... the Jot is cleaner and more powerful, the DX7 is far more functional. If I had to choose, I'd go with the DX7. It's more than powerful enough to drive needy planars (I've used it on the LCD3's, LCD-XC's and a few others) and when I want to kick it up a notch, or several, it plays nicely with the pro-iCan.

bigshelNice setup. I think my next purchase will be a OTL Tube amp for 'different' when I am in the mood for it. I agree, the functionality of the DX7 alone puts it ahead of the Joutenheim. Don't get me wrong, the Joutenheim get's used daily by myself at work, but for home use, the remote on the DX7 is just fantastic for relaxing and chilling to your favorite audio.
