Must say i'm super impressed with the unit. Balanced output is working great, drivers were easy to install. Power is phenominal. i can turn it all the way up to 0 with DAC and amp running (0 is highest) and highest on my pc and still get 0 distortion from my hd6xx headphones. Also there is 0 and i mean 0 noise at all through balanced even at that level with nothing playing, no hissing at all. Impressive. I cant say if you would see the same results with lower impedence headphones, or through SE connection, as i dont have anyway of testing it.
I did order the black, it arrived 2 days ago so i've had some time with it. I have 0 complaints other than 1. I dont have a remote and wish it came with it from the factory. 2. There are settings and the book doesnt say how to use them except from a remote. How does one access the display brightness? How do you access the Modes 1-7, so i can at least see for myself how much of a difference it makes. In the toppings driver theres also a "USB streaming Mode", wtf is that? default its on reliable, but theres minimal latency all the way through extra safe (reliable is default in the middle). Also i'm not familiar with ASIO buffer size. Its set to auto, but ranges from 64 to 32768 samples. What should it be set to?
Unless you require super ultra low latency audio, there is no point in changing any of those settings.
If you only plan to use the DAC for personal playback, defaults are perfectly fine. If you start doing content creation and are using this (instead of an interface designed for it) there are times when you'll want to drop the buffer sizes and tell it to spit its shit reeeeeallly quick.
I still don't have any postage information on my order....
That's strange. Maybe they are waiting on another shipment. Did you get silver or black?
Same here... Still waiting (impatiently) here as well. I ordered silver....
I did message support last week and was told 'the item you ordered has become backordered by the vendor'. I am guessing they only received some of the units they were meant to and the rest of us just have to wait (although haven't been given any estimate or indication on when it might arrive)
I got the black version :S
Order cancelled..... nice... pop....
ASIO "Auto" buffer setting is fine, no need to modify it. Unless you're playing games but listening to the music latency is no big deal for you so just leave the setting on "reliable" as long as there is no dropouts.
The manual may have been updated to include setting changes without a remote on the English website - http://en.tpdz.net/wdzn_detail/newsId=73.html. It includes instructions on how to change all the settings without the remove. More specifically:
1) Press and hold depressed volume knob when powering to access menu for filter modes, auto on/off, display light dark, and factory reset
2) change input - press volume knob
3) Change output mode - headphone only, DAC only, headphone and pre-amp outputs - double press volume knob.
Well, that works to bring the settings menu up. But controls don't work once in that menu. Requires a flip of ye ol' power switch to get out.
I'm thinking I'm going to just grab a good programmable remote and use the hex codes (which can be found with a google and forum crawl).
I have had success getting out of the setting menu via the following method:
1) enter setting menu
2) Change setting which the arrow is on via pushing in the volume knob button
3) scroll the arrow to other settings via rotating the volume knob.
4) Once satisfied with the settings, rotate volume knob to setting #4 "Save and Exit"
5) Push volume knob in... Voila!
If you find a specific programmable remote that works well, please post as I may want to pick one up.
With regards to the remote. Will do, probably not happening for a week or so; totally not a high priority. But I remember seeing a post in something like head-fi about remotes that worked.
As for the settings stuff via volume button, I must have hit a derpy unit. The volume button and dial doesn't work at all once I get into the settings menu. :(
Aside from the high res capabilities, I'm rather disappointed by the unit in general. I get WAY more use of my TEAC UD-501. No hoops to jump through to make anything work AND I don't have to worry about muting the volume before doing sample rate change (or just bloody well stopping playback). That POP is no joke. Ow.
Are you able to confirm that this can also function as pre-amp? I'm hoping it can act as pre-amp with volume control since I'm planning to use this on active monitors on balance configuration.
If you run the unit in HP+DAC mode, you can modify the volume levels out the back with the knob.
Thanks! Wow this is a winner, an all in one audio hub for my needs. I'm in, hopefully Topping can catch up with the back order. I don't want mine gets cancelled soon, it's a long wait though until June.
Use DAC+HP mode then enter the system menu. it's a weird idiosyncrasy but this is what Topping support told me and it works
That worked. Thanks for the info. Now I can change the filters.
How do I download the driver? when I click the zip from their shared dropbox there is no way to download it. Thanks in advanced.
Is the output mode saved after you power off the unit ? My unit always seems to default to DAC mode when turned on.
Mine does yes. Unit powers off nightly, and when I turn it back on dac with amp setting is automatically on, volume is the same as well.
