I'm really interested in this "Balanced" DAC/Amp. I have Sen HD650 and AKG K550 MKII, are there any issues for my AKG headphones?
The output impedance of the amp on this is rather high, so it will colour the sound of any headphone with an impedance below 80 ohms. Shame on you Topping. That said, AKG stuff tends to have a pretty minor peak in the impedance curve, so that may lessen the effect. You can also alleviate this by using an iFi Ear Buddy, which will give you an output impedance of a few ohms, but will also lower the output.
In What way will colour the sound? I have three pretty expensive headphones and all of them have less then 70ohm impedence. The ATH1000X have around 30 ohms... The AKG712 Pro around 62 I believe, The Sony Z7 80oms? So not really advisable to buy this? I am not going to purchase extra headphones soon so probably better go for something else? Thanks.
The effect of output impedance is a bit complicated. Basically, nearly all dynamic headphones have a different impedance at different frequencies, with the impedance being highest at the natural resonance frequency of the driver. Higher output impedance, or more accurately, lower damping factor (damping factor is the ratio of headphone impedance to source output impedance) causes a boost in the frequency response of the headphone around the peak in the impedance curve. This can produce a pleasant effect, since most dynamics have their impedance peak in the lows, thus producing a warmer sound.
This thing is an amazing DAC, but the amp lets it down. However, I will repeat my recommendation to get an iFi Ear buddy, since that will drop the output impedance to a few ohms, letting you use all of your stuff without issue.
Thanks for your input, I went ahead and joined this drop!
