I've heard some talk of a new DAC coming to MD to pair with the THX 789. I was planning on buying the DX7s to pair with the 789, but if a new DAC is coming to market I want to wait. Does anyone have any further details?
I'd be interested in knowing more of this. So far it has been DX7s, SMSL SU-8 or topping D50 but now I may just have to wait.
I will watch for that too, thanks for sharing
Would love it, but don't want to spend that kind of dac money. Likely MD R2R and SMSL SU-8 on top of what I already have
Once you are at that price point you are entering the RME ADI-2 DAC level. I have one and it is really nice, specifically if you like to EQ your headphones, since it has parametric EQ and saved presets. The amp section on it is solid, especially the IEM port is dead silent if you are into low impedance sensitive IEMs.
I really do like the looks of the RME and have been following the thread on head-fi, I'm hoping to check some reviews and comparisons once the Airist R2R is out and then make a decision. The savings of the MD dac would be nice, but depends how it stacks up!
Those two DACs are very different.
If you are willing to spend the coin, the RME ADI-2 DAC is a wonderful reference level DAC. It's well-made and very intuitive. It's made of most of the same studio grade parts as their more expensive ADC/DAC. I love the sound and justified the cost, but the difference is not night and day with other less expensive DACS with the same AK4490 chipset. On a very short comparison the SMSL Sanskrit 10 which Massdrop drops sometimes has that AK chip but no balanced outs, I got a very similar sound from the Sanskrit. YMMV.
